snap ring pliers

so im trying to rebuild the 6 gear tranny and removing the snap rings from inside the outdrives is proving near impossible with the tools ive been able to get. Is there any tool that i dont need to modify to make work. I've tried harbor frieght's tool but it doesnt get tight enough to remove it. I've tried every tool my friends have and none seem to work. If you have a preferred tool, please list a link to it. I'm getting really frustrated with these rings

i just buy new ones after i destroy the originals prying them out.

I do too, but I'd also like a set of the snap ring pliers especially if they are a decent price.

please tell me how your are removing them b/c im having 0 luck at them. 3 days now trying out new methods of this and im getting nowhere.

i just get behind one side with a small screwdriver and bent it out of the groove. then bend it up, and pull the ring out with pliers.

I've tried a clip removal tool but could not get the right size. So instead i use the following simple tools and process:

1) clamp gear in vise (careful not to over tighten)
2) use the point of a awl or a suitably sized nail to secure one side of clip
3) use small screw driver to flex clip out of groove and remove

I recommend safety glasses in case clip goes airborne.

It takes some trial and error but i havent damaged the clips and it usually takes less than a minute.

Just found that Wiha makes some with a .035 tip. That's the size of the tiny Allen for the 6 gear idler screws. I think this is the one.

so i had an odd solution work.

banged on the bearing from the backside to where it deformed it slightly but pushed it forward and pressured the ring

then with an eye glass screwdriver, slide in the lowered part(middle area) of the bearing and twisted. It shot out faster than i could see

ive had good luck with some small pick tools and a pocket screwdriver. technique may vary but for the outdrives and also the bottom loader gold shocks have the circlips as well.

Just buy some spring wire that fits the hole well, bend it in a long 1 1/2" "U" shape with the legs about the same width apart as the holes. Then bend the last 1/4" of the "U's" legs down so it looks like an "L" from the side.

Hard to explain but this allows you to hold the wire with one hand and squeeze the legs with pliars at the same time.

I can take a picture tonight and post for a better understanding if anyone is interested. And it only costs .60¢

I'm not totally sure the hole size on the snap rings in the 6 gear but walmart has a round nose plier for $5.00. The nose is around .042 so maybe those might work.
