The Ugly Truckling JRXT

Post by BattleTrak »

After building my Jrx2 series buggies and setting aside parts for another build or two, I still have a decent sized pile of used Losi parts. So I have decided to take the worst parts that are still functional…you know..the scratched, faded, rusty, crusty and warped parts that you wouldn’t be able to give away..and make a JRXT to bash around the yard with.

Nice eh?

Moving along quickly since I am doing minimal cleaning. The 30 year old servo tape came off rather easily with a razor blade and goo gone…looks nicer than I thought it would!

Crusty! Flirting with disaster on this steering setup..but I have more parts if they break.
Image

Yep… someone JB Welded the wing tube holes up on the rear bulkhead for some reason..? Don’t miss the speed holes in the motor plate and front body mount!

After being so meticulous with other builds…it is nice to say f-it-all and make this truck for fun!

Even though this screw boss on the battery box has a big crack in it..the screw tightened up nicely.

Speaking of screws..an ugly screw is better than no screw..right?

Yikes..

Transmission complete. Pro top shaft and gears..a used ball diff and bearings that didn’t feel too bad, so in they went. I don’t have many of the Jrx2 outdrive spacers left, so I installed LXT outdrives that don’t need them. (The LXT outdrives are basically a copy of the #7321 RPM outdrives)

Ready for tie rods and shocks.

Looks like it's shaping up nicely. What's that motor in front of it? Some sort of Trinity stock?

That motor is a Slot Machine 1. My other choices are a B&R Bullet Pro or a Speed Gems 2 Onyx.

Oh there are options? The SG2 Onyx seems like the choice to make. More power, has bearings, can be disassembled for cleaning, has more power...

So you’re saying to go with more power?
The electronics will be vintage with a Tekin Rebel esc and a Nimh battery. It should be able to handle that motor though.

The chassis is complete now. Shocks look rough on the outside, but have polished shafts, used Teflon pistons inside, and used cartridges that still had a nice drag/seal..no leaks so far. The camber and tie rods are proudly total cheese though!…used long & short RPM rod ends with scrap 4-40 rod bits..but they solid!

Despite how ugly I want to make this thing look.. I’m also trying to beef it up to take some bashing and abuse. Upper shock mounts changed to the later design..ball studs reinforced with locking nuts..also used a 7/8” screw for the lower rear shock to make sure it goes all the way into the H arm.

And it’s done.. The JRXTrugly! The ride height is set a little high for more ground clearance and the body set low…looks better than I thought it would.

I just took it out for a test run with the Slot Machine and it performed great. Going to put the Speed Gems 2 Onyx in now.

A 5000 mah battery seems like too much run time for a brushed motor. At least the way I gear things, the motor would be blisteringly hot afterwards.
