The plastic spur and its pinion are molded together as a cluster gear. The problem I was having was with the pinion. That Reedy 3300kV motor makes a fair bit of torque - perhaps more torque than this gear was designed to accept. After only four packs, it was looking very ragged and I don't think it would have lasted much longer.
The re-re Ultima uses a metal pinion but it's 48 pitch while vintage Ultima gears are mod .8 (very close to 32 pitch) so the gears can't be mixed.
Apart from the nylon spur gear, all gears included with the re-re are metal so its transmission should be bullet proof. The downside is the increased weight and rotating mass that comes with those metal gears - it's a very heavy transmission.
