MMS Finned Motor Mount (MMSY3)

Post by dinglem »

I have posted this in my Works '92 thread as it will be going on to that build, but I just thought i would start a new item-specific thread in case anybody is researching these rare (and very beautiful) items and wants to search for info.

This is an MMS (Model Motor Sport) finned heatsink motor mount, which also has the even rarer optional option(!) of the finned upper bearing cap. MMS were a UK brand, and were distributed by Central Models in Birmingham, known mainly as CML. The team CML drivers were also predominantly the UK Team Yokomo drivers, including Craig Drescher. Therefore, most of the Team Yokomo cars of the early 90's included the MMS optional parts, including this mount, and the front MMS nylon bulkead for example. MMS advert below, Yoke parts mentioned bottom-right.

Famously, these MMS parts also comprised some components required for the 'Drescher conversion' often seen on the higher-end Works cars.

Anyway - here is the item I have sat on the table:-

Central Models was one of my more local model shops, and occasionally I was given access to some of the Team CML parts, so I ended up running one of these finned motor mounts on my Works '91, which i am fortunate enough to still have in 'last raced' condition. You can just about make out the fins in the below picture.

Quite bizarrely I managed to get hold of a third MMS mount this past week, and what i have noticed is that the spangly one pictured above is of a very slightly different design to my own original, and also to the 3rd one i have located. Mine and the third have a rounded-off front fin profile directly below the main belt position, whereas the spangly one has a square fin profile. I can only assume that they changed the design due to the main belt coming so close to the end of the fins immediately below it.

These two pictures below show the rounded off one and the square one both mounted on a car. You will see what i mean straight away. I imagine when backing off from hard throttle then the brief slack in the belt might have caused it to touch the fins. Anybody else noticed these slightly different designs?
