Dazzas 6 Gear Retro Racer

Post by Dazza »

I've got this old donor car I bought years ago when I lived in Australia. It was used for racing by the looks of it, either that or a test rig for a big drill. So for this weekend's project I am going to give it a birthday and make a 6 gear retro racer using a few mainly period available aftermarket mods.

For the front end I used Andy's arms that have not quite taken the red dye, but will match my wheels quite nicely. DuBro upper arm links were a popular modification back in the day, some NIP not quite as vintage as the rest of the car black camber blocks and A&L steering round out the front end.

For the rear end I used the matching set of Andys arms and more Du-Bro upper arm links. I'm still missing one, but hopefully I have one coming with a trade I'm working on. I was going to use MIP shiny CVD's for this build, but when going through the parts I found out my wheels wouldn't fit. As the wheels match the suspension I am using some 6371 axles instead. This is probably better for a semi-authentic old school racer as I'm thinking the 3/16 rear axles didn't come out until much later. I rounded out the rear end build with a 6 gear trans that has been a ball bearing set up from day one so is still in pretty good nick.

Time to build some shocks. I've got some nice shiny gold MIP shaft sets to go in them. 1.02 for the rear and .71 for the front. For some reason I thought I was going to be able to fit .89 shock bodies up front, but that is actually quite snug. So it's .56 gold bodies in front with 1.02 hard anodized bodies in the rear. I'm finishing them off with some totally unauthentic old school / its all I had left in the parts box composite shock caps!

Its getting there, I might have to start thinking about electronics soon. It looks like there aren't enough holes in it yet though, so I'm going to drill some more to fit the battery cup for a Lipo :)
