I bought this buggy from fellow member cyberfox some time ago and now plan to run it in a vintage race closeby.
My initial plan when I bought this was to put Lazer arms on it. I tried, and Tamiya df-03, and Academy wyvern. None worked out.
I did find the conic hexes to squeeze the bearings, so I replced them with academy u-j's which use crosspins.
I also made a new lower chassis, with more space for the lipo saddle packs and electroniscs, and a new outline to match the new body shape. The original body and underpan came with the car but were painted very poorly and no one makes repro's.
So I testfitted some of the bodies I have and decided for the xx4.
Another thing I managed: slipper!
And last but not least: I replaced the stock diff. Nothing wrong with the stock one, but I put a lazer one in. Added a pulley from the yz10 and abelt and replaced topgear by a pinion pulley. So now the motor has to spin in reverse but since it's mounted opposit, well it spins the correct way compared to winning cars like the 870 now.

It has been modified from its original looks quite a bit but yes same era. To me the MRC cars, especially the MRX2, always came accross as a mix between the optima and cat. I guess they could have picked worse for inspiration.

Thank you. It made a drastic change to the internal gear ratio but is very smooth. I tested it with a stock 27 turn moter, but maybe a 35turn would be better suited. On the other hand I have a low kv outrunner I got recently. 1100kv. I could try that but need to get a 5mm bore pinion in 48 pitch to work with the traxxas spur/slipper.
If you could tell me the exact release date, that would be helpfull to find out in which category I can run in vintage races.

Some have sticky pages, yes, but I guess that has more to do with the overrun I had had a couple years ago than with your drooling

Last weekend I took the car out for a quick try on the track. They had some repairs going on, so I couldn't run full laps... It didn't matter though. I very quickly learned my shock setup was all wrong for this track but had no time to stay longer nor tools along.

A bit more work done today: better wing mount, new rear shock tower and purple shocks from Academy.
I also replaced the inner bearings of the steering knuckles. It now has 4mm thick ones instead of 5mm. This way I hope the academy uj's won't bend again.
Oh, almost forgot: an extra bodymount was added to keep the rear end of the body well centered and away from the spur teeth.

Small update: I ran the car last weekend at the 2020 vintage euro masters in Sittard (NL)
Paired it up with a 21.5t brushless motor and 35t motorpinion.
Unfortunately I broke the front shocktower: crashing into an oncoming optima mid as I landed on the wrong lane from a missed jump.

It was limited to the release years 87-88 so mainly cat xls's and optima mid's, and a single hybrid: 870C mixed with a Cat front end.

I'm not a good driver and was struggling with technical issues, but the car was going better and better as the day progressed. My main adversary was an optima -mid I managed to keep behind me till the front shocktower broke and I had to quit.
I did have issues with the slipper in the last 2 runs; probaly overheated the traxxas set-up earlier in the day.
