Re: Traxxas Bullet Rebuild
How'd the repair on the gear case go?
Turned out pretty clean. Like the wheel choice but how are you going to convert the front to hexes?
Besides the front steering knuckles and the front upper deck support it looks like you got this almost back to its full glory. Following closely...

Re: Traxxas Bullet Rebuild
I’ve just reassembled the gearcase as is, it’s not ideal as the suspension pin moves laterally a little bit and causes that side to droop a little more, will keep my eyes out for a replacement, or another solution. The front deck support and a gear cover and I’d be extremely happyklavy69 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 24, 2019 9:21 pm How'd the repair on the gear case go?

To run the hex fronts, these parts should do the trick:

I’m fairly certain the geometry is the same as the originals
**edit** Wish I had the ability to design the parts I need, and then the ability to 3D print them

Re: Traxxas Bullet Rebuild
Those parts do come up from time to time. I'll look in my stash to see if I have anything and keep my eyes peeled.
I've waited for years to find I part I was missing so it's not a quick hobby for vintage.

Re: Traxxas Bullet Rebuild
There is a thread on here about using Hydrogen Peroxide and UV light (sunshine) (see link at bottom of this post)

Basically using 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, submerge the parts in a glass jar and set it in the sun or under a UV light. The longer you leave it, the whiter it gets, I only gave these a couple hours in the sun on a 46c day

Re: Traxxas Bullet Rebuild
So I went with Bandit front steering blocks in place of the Stampede ones, as they are a bit smaller, using a 5x8x2.5 bearing instead of a bigger 5x11x4 bearing. This will enable the block to fit into the original C Hub/Castor block, with only about 2mm needing shaving down.mtbkym01 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 24, 2019 9:56 pm

Re: Traxxas Bullet Rebuild
Needed to do a fair bit of fiddling to get the blocks on:
Shaved down the top and bottom so as they’d fit into the C Hub, as expected

19B8E1A5-E24E-4238-8616-5564F5CE9500 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr
Then I had to open up the king pin hole so as the king pin shaft would fit
C69A3C61-6096-4D40-A803-C836554897C5 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr
This caused the king pin to rub on the axle, so using a screw with a nyloc nut gave enough clearance, but another issue was discovered, the back of the steering block hits on the C Hub, not allowing the block to turn
F7872701-30FF-407F-ABC6-809EDFB40763 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr
So some shaving of the inside of the C Hub was required

This gets everything together, but still gives limited steering throw

Now in all honesty, this is ok for purpose, as the buggy isn’t actually able to be run due to the other issues identified earlier in this thread, but I have ordered the C Hub from the Bandit from my LHS to have a fiddle with anyway.
Got the wheels on, rear springs are a little soft, so will look through my spares to see what options I’ve got to lift the rear ride height a bit

Re: Traxxas Bullet Rebuild
Wow, two things.......
1 - How did I miss this thread to begin with
2 - That thing came out pretty good !!!!
If you know a part number or feel like rummaging check out the old Traxxas boxes at HH. There were a few bullet parts and quite a few white Traxxas parts (gearboxes too maybe), what they were for I couldn't tell you though.
I'm glad you did something with it and it looks great, good job

Re: Traxxas Bullet Rebuild
Those are pretty decent, inexpensive shocks. I used the same set with minor modifications to fit a Turbo Optima. I found them too stiff with the included weight of oil and pistons, but it wasn't much work to get them dialed in. The sad thing is those shock sets appear to be discontinued everywhere I've looked, and it's impossible to buy more sets...I think they were under $25 for the set of 4.

Re: Traxxas Bullet Rebuild
Yeah this was my 2nd set, the first set are sitting on a Tamiya Madcap, I bought these a few years ago to use on a Turbo Optima that I’m in the process of rebuilding now, but then I acquired a set of Option House Equalisers that are doing that job. What I found interesting was that the first set I bought came fully assembled, while this set was in “kit” form.

Re: Traxxas Bullet Rebuild
Same here, I need to pay attention more. I have a Bullet in storage from one of my childhood friends that's just waiting for a full restoration, this makes me want to get off my duff and get started on it!
