Martin Truex Jr's record setting RC boat
I didn't know this until this past weekend that Martin Truex Jr. (2017 NASCAR champ) holds something like 14 NAMBA RC boat records. Apparently he's been designing, building and racing RC boats for the past 20 years and recently received a major sponsorship deal with Futaba.
Here's a video of a 119 mph record setting run from 2015.

Yeah, me too. Apparently he's been setting these speed records on a pond in Huntsville Al - my neck of the woods. Wow, I really need to get out of the house more often.

Well I'm certainly not a fan of nitro but in this instance I think the sound from those twin 45's running wide open just makes the boat appear to be going even faster. Without that audio, I don't think the video would have had the same impact.
This raises an interesting question; has brushless/lipo technology finally caught up with nitro with regard to power:weight ratio?

I think general opinion is BL Lipo is at least on par with nitro these days , there are probably areas where both have an edge , for example you could save weight with nitro by having a smaller tank if you only need a short run at high speed but lipos to get a high C rating have to be fairly chunky ... Of course I could be wrong , often am ! That an amazing clip though , hard to believe !XLR8 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 07, 2018 9:14 pmWell I'm certainly not a fan of nitro but in this instance I think the sound from those twin 45's running wide open just makes the boat appear to be going even faster. If a jobs not worth doing then its certainly not worth doing well.
A problem shared is a problem halved but an advantage shared is no advantage at all.

Re: Martin Truex Jr's record setting RC boat
pretty cool. Also pretty cool that I finally watched the video after getting it to work here in the thread and realized I had been standing on the shores of that pond before myself. My brother used to live in Arab Alabama which ih his words at the time "just up the hill from Huntsville" .
I've seen some of this guys other record breaking videos and they are all pretty wicked. WIth my roots in nitro I can honestly say that brushless might be faster but nothing beats the sound and the smell of nitro action. Its in the tinkering side of things when you do nitro and it makes it simpler than all this new fangled brushless technology stuff

Cool. I live about 45 miles south of Huntsville. Do you recall which pond or where it is? I'd like to look it up next time I go there.
I'd need to check the NAMBA rules but I'd bet there are separate records posted for nitro vs. electric. I'll admit that I love the sound from that boat as it screams by.

I'll have to get ahold of my brother to find out. He took me there and a few others within drinking distance to "show me how to fish Alabaman Style"

Re: Martin Truex Jr's record setting RC boat
Wow, that's incredible. I didn't watch the video with sound so I assumed it was electric. Even more impressive is that they're out there doing it in the rain!
Makes me a little sad though that the boat I bought last summer isn't going to hit the water this summer either.
Too much going on, and funds needing to be spent elsewhere.
