Yes, i do trim some material off the motor guard, for the fan to sit flush and increase air flow as well, and need to re tap the hole to for 3mm screw, original hole for 2.6mm screw.

I suppose it's easy enough to check. If after a good run your motor is warm and the motor guard isn't, neither the guard or the fan is doing a whole lot of cooling.
