Need a Little help with RC10 Body Identification

Post by Basher67 »

I picked up two of these bodies with a collection I bought recently and didn't think much about them. I thought "big deal, 6160 protech bodies" there is a never ending supply on ebay for around $15 right? So today I pulled one out (they were carefully wrapped in tissue paper) for a street buggy RC10 project I'm playing with and I noticed a few things that caught my attention. First, they have no overspray film. They are a much thicker and more rigid material than the modern protech bodies I have purchased in the last couple years. The window "netting" looks like it was added to the mold by hand and not very neatly. There are no cut lines anywhere on the front of the body. The edges of the material have little "dimples" from where it was clamped down in the vacuum mold. I'm thinking these are obviously an earlier release of the protech body. My question is are they anything special? Are they no big deal, just an older version of a common body or are these something special that deserve to be on original edinger shelf queen? I figured I would ask the vintage RC10 gurus here before I start hacking it up like its just another $15 ebay body.

Those are the earlier ones, much better quality and thicker lexan than the late bodies. Probably more of those made over the years than any other body, but also more of them destroyed lol. Good body, deserves to be on a special build. If your gonna build a runner use a cheap new body and keep this alive

That's what I was kinda leaning toward. I may paint one "box art" style and put it on my shelfer in place of the modern protech thats on it now. Is there a difference between the edinger and cadillac bodies? I was looking in the posts for info and the only mention I found was about the driver interior that came with them.

I don't recall a change in the bodies up until the window net changed. I think those were all well after production of the kits ended and they were on to the Protech II and Viper

The 6160 bodies with the wavy window netting are the original bodies that Associated kept on producing in their factory until the company was sold to Thunder Tiger in 2005. Thunder Tiger then took the mould and made the new one to fit their machines in their factory in Taiwan, which is why all the new bodies are much neater.

For a vintage restoration to be correct, it needs one of these older bodies.

I need to start doing a search before I post. I just posted a photo of the same body. I was assuming original but was also not sure. I think I will just save this as is.
