Microchip thing on the front I would imagine is some form of lap counter transceiver thing.

I would say it's most likely an external BEC (Battery Eliminator Circuitry) unit, to replace the 4 AA batteries for the radio.

I was going to remove it because I was also thinking maybe some kind of transponder, but it is the on/off switch on the bottom of the car-all one piece. I've never heard of an external BEC but that makes a lot of sense since it is integrated with the switch.

That makes sense, My guess was due to the location. I did see the switch down there but I also noted two sets of wires going to the mystery box.

Ok, now we're onto something. Sorry PRP, I misunderstood your first reply. I also have a rc12i of sorts and now comparing all of these cars, I think I have some hybrids on my hands. Give me a couple min. and I'll post the pics.

Ok, the guy who built all these cars was no slouch in the design or fabrication/machining of rc parts and it was evident in all the cars I purchased from his son. I received a pile of templates with the collection-mostly different shock tower configurations for the RC10. In the first 3 pics here we have what I believe is an RC12i on the left and the car in question on the right. As PRP stated, there is an obvious resemblance and some of the pieces are unmistakable RC12i such as the front suspension parts and the rear axle/ball diff. setup. In the 4th pic, our mystery machine is on the left with a Tamiya Road Wizard on the right, and you can see that the battery straps, rear shock, and mechanical speed control are straight out of a Tamiya package. If you look closely down the middle of the top of the chassis, you will see an extra stiffener that has been glued into place just like a tamiya road wizard.Pic 5 is a close-up of the mystery machine rear body posts. Carbon fiber? The last 2 pics are of 2 other cars that came with the collection. They more closely resemble RC12i's, but look almost entirely homemade with some Tamiya touches-like the battery straps and the glued stiffener down the middle of the chassis along with a Tamiya motor in the one. Anyone ever seen anything like this? This guy looks like he was testing different designs for 1/12th racing.

Looks more like it started life as a 12e and got modded to be more like a 12i or Tamiya 1/12.

It's funny that you just said that because I'm currently scouring the internet looking for key component differences between the 12e and the 12i. The only 1/12 pan car I've ever owned was a Bolink 12 and that was about 26 years ago I have come across a couple 12L's recently but this is mostly all new ground for me and getting a bunch of hybrids was a rough place to begin learning. I did notice last night that my little mystery machine had a reedy modified motor that has the east edinger adress on it. Trying to find more info on that too. It sucks because I've always mainly searched our forum here for info and with all the missing pics (thanks to photosuckit) alot of the visual info is currently missing. Some components were shared, I think, among all AE pan cars so I'm trying to figure out time periods too. Like when did the front axles go from c-clip retention to a nylock nut. Not sure if I'm on the right track or not.

The rear pod bulkheads look like they're from the 12e.

Front axles used e-clips until the 12ls I think, but threaded were available as an aftermarket hop-up before that.

Reedy mod motors will typically have the turns and winds written on the armature.

There was a company that made extended upper pod plates like those on your two 12i's but I don't recall the name.

There was a company that made extended upper pod plates like those on your two 12i's but I don't recall the name.

Found the company name: Outlaw Motor Sports. Ad can be found in the April '88 issue of RCCA (PDF pg 27).

Not RC but hoping someone into slot cars might recognize this and give me more info on it. It was given to me by a friend who built and raced it in the mid 1950's. I've only got enough knowledge of slot cars too know this ain't exactly one....they run a bit different in that they race along a wall instead of in a slotted track.

If you know what they're called please let me know so I can Google more info.
