Something different - D&A nitro truck rebuild

Post by R Cane »

Got this in a parts lot and a couple vehicles from Craig's about a year and ½ ago. It looked complete, but very grimy.
Did he say D&A? What the @#$& is that? It's one of the many copies of the Redcat Volcano; this one was made around 2008 evidently. Exceed, HSP, Redcat, and HiMoto (and who knows who else) all make a version of this truck, and they are 90% exactly the same parts. This is evidently the really obscure one, I found pretty much nothing at all online about the thing. The company webpage is dead.
This is one of many vehicles that I've had in the queue to rebuild and sell to fund other RC vehicles and some tools, etc I'd like to get. So, nothing major...not doing a strict restoration...just a good cleaning and replacement of parts that need it.

The truck as I got it, minus the motor, I had already taken that out to soak.

It's a shaft-drive 4WD, with a center differential/transfer case type deal. 6 dogbones in 4 different sizes.
It's pretty robust as far as economy vehicles go. It's seen some good use, but there were no broken parts to replace. All that I needed to replace were a couple plastic wheel hexes and a few partially stripped screws. The rest was all cleanup and adjustments. When I got it, there was nothing connected to the brake, so I'll have to bend a new linkage wire for that. The motor was completely frozen - somebloody didn't bother to put in after-run oil the last time it was used, which was obviously a good while ago.

The chassis top and all upper plasics are in great shape. The bottom of the chassis and bottoms of the arms are scratched a good bit.
After cleaning, the start of the rebuild

The motor after a very thorough cleaning. It's now as free as the bird Skynyrd was talking about. One small problem though...After rebuilding it, I have an O-ring leftover. I took the motor apart 3 times, and for the life of me, I can't find anyplace that it could go. Feeling rather DUH  about it. I keep all component parts separate while I'm working, so it really shouldn't be from something else. I'll have to give that some more thought.

With the diff box in place, then with the rear arms

With the battery/receiver box and steering servo & pieces parts

and then the fuel tank (small!) and the motor

And as far as replacing parts, I forgot to mention the clutch shoes. They were pretty beat down, so I ordered a new set - the only thing I had to order for this rebuild...all the other misc I had in my spares.
The motor cooling tower has a few small scratches, but most of that mottled look is the paint that they put on it. It's like a purple and silver flake type thing with a very rough texture...don't care for it...rather just have the nice purple ano like the chassis.
