GT clutch conversion to GT2

Post by mAdMan »

I would like to attempt to change a GT clutch to a GT2. The GT1 clutch has no springs and as a result always engages and moves the car forward at idle. Just spoke with Don at AE. He gave me part #2312. A new threaded adapter for the short shaft GT that is also threaded on the other end to accept a Allen bolt, also metric and not SAE, so new bearings will have to be used.

THE PROBLEM:
The GT2 clutch bell is ~1/8" wider. This will likely rub on the spur gear of the GT.

SOLUTION:
A new top shaft and v2 slipper upgrade from a GT2. This shaft is longer so the clutch mounts about 1/8" farther out and can even be shimmed out farther. *Make sure to get the right pitch V2 spur gear.

Luckily I have a AE15 from a GT2 complete. I just ordered the shaft. I posted this as it's still fresh in my memory. When the parts come I'll post back on the results.

or you can just get an MIP 4n1 clutch shoe set for your gt which has a spring around it to pull the shoes back together. Its always been the first add on to any GT I have ever owned. They aren't as littered all over on ebay as they used to be but they can still be found. The part number is #3012 if that helps the search. That reminds me that I need to check for these at my LHS who used to have a ton of these hanging in the case.

Thank you. I'll take a complete 4-1 if you can find me an extra one. I can't locate one :-(

I do see them on eBay pretty regularly. Just have to check in every couple days and wait if Todd comes up empty.

I did find one at Pegasus hobbies it's about an hour from me. I may make a trip down there. Klavy if you already got one for me I'll still buy it.

I'd take a MIP 4-n-1 over a GT2 clutch any day. I would ONLY use a GT2 clutch for a pilot shaft engine.

The MIP is niiiice. I adjusted the idle so low now.

The weird ringing stopped. I have a feeling it was the bellhousing? Either way she idles nice now and no rattling.

Good to see you got the MIP 4n1. LHS only had one out and has a bunch he put away in a box since he figured he'd never sell them in his lifetime. Now to just find them...

Todd, I'd be interested in two 4-n-1's if you come across them. Best clutch ever.
