SC10 gear diff problems.?
Hi everyone..
Has anyone had any issues with the gear diff in their SC10??
On the weekend I was driving my SC10 which had probably only seen 2 hours track time prior to the weekend, and it was still setup with a 13.5 LRP brushless motor from racing.. After 5 mins or so of doing laps of the backyard, I started to notice a grinding noise coming from the SC10.. Figuring that it was a spur gear, and that the damage would have already been done, I kept driving.. I drove for another 10 mins, until it had finally gotten to the stage where it would not go up the hill at full throttle..
Later that night I disassembled the SC10 and found that the spur gear was perfect.. So I locked the wheels and turned the spur gear by hand, and I could feel/hear/see something skipping/grinding in the gearbox.. After removing and disassembling the gearbox, all of the gears looked fine, so I disassembled the gear diff, and found that it was full of silver/grey paste, (aka grease and metal shavings) and the teeth on one of the side gears had all burred over..
Is this something that is common to the Associated gear diffs??
Thanks..
PS. I've posted this here because its not a vintage RC10, and there didn't see to be a better place to put it..

Re: SC10 gear diff problems.?
There was a problem with some needing shims but I would just swap out to a great ball diff: http://www.teamassociated.com/parts/details/9853/

Re: SC10 gear diff problems.?
Thanks Rod..
I ordered a gear diff rebuild kit and I will pay more attention to the shims on reassembly..
If that fails, I will change over to a ball diff..
I was just curious if it was a common problem..

Re: SC10 gear diff problems.?
Yeah i had the first kit release an had a similar problem an ae sent me some shims. Because of the orings you really have to build it so you can barely get the last shim in or build it to spec an after a couple of runs rebuild it with more shims once the orings settle.. Kinda a pain I think an I definitely agree with rod about the ball diff. A great way to improve the truck on track an on the bench

Bully I do believe that my SC10 could have been a first release, although you must have been lucky if all that you needed to fix yours was shims.. One of the side gears in mine is totally shot..
The diff rebuild kit comes with shims, plus I have the ones in the diff now, so hopefully I'll have enough..

Re: SC10 gear diff problems.?
Yeah I meant the solution was extra shims, mine was caught early but still had considerable wear an needed rebuilding..
