Finally got myself an 870c

Post by _timmy_ »

Well its taken a while but i finally managed to snag myself an 870c. It was the first yokomo i owned all those years ago and its great to finally have one sitting in front of me. Condition wise it looks pretty good, so hopefully a strip and light clean should suffice. It's not going to be a runner but i'm also not going to go down the line of replacing everything with new. I've had a set of original wheels sitting waiting for it for the last 18 months that came with a Works '92, just need to source some tyres and a belt tensioner, the car came with a top deck, shown in the last photo, but i prefer the topless look for the 870!

That looks like a works car built on an 870 chassis.

Yes, definite upgrade from a standard issue 870c! Plus, it all looks to be in excellent shape.

Definitely mixed emotions on this one, not really sure what to do with it.
Started the tear down after posting last nite, hadn't looked it over properly until then, it became obvious straight away it wasn't what I thought, the perils of buying after only seeing 2 distant body on photos.
'91 front shock tower, top deck, fr n rr arms and rear hub carriers all in great condition.
Rear shock tower and wing mounts/wires, hubs, chassis are 870.
Fitted with a mint yokomo impulse 13th motor too.
....and obviously the TCS.
It's all in great condition, but do I leave as is or sell on/ swap the non original parts to get a genuine 870?

If Your big wish is the 870c - then You should trace the missing parts and put them on this chassis.

But if You want a race capable buggy, I´d keep it as is.

Making it a clean 870c would be a serious step back, IMO.

I'd gladly buy the turnbuckles from you if you wanted to part with them.

Yokomos definately seem like difficult/expensive cars to restore.

Just buy the correct shell for the one you really wanted and mount that on top of what you have.
Dennis is very right about this being a big step forward.
Going back would require you to switch the shocks, arms, front steering knuckles, front and rear carriers, maybe turnbuckles too, u-j's, drivehubs, tires and wheels.
In the end you'd have a car that doesn't accept current 2.2" tires and for which wheels are rare and expensive.

If you really want I think I can help with a swap (used parts for used parts) and get you around 90% there. If the others here help out, we can avoid mistakes, but I doubt you'd be happier in the end

That car is to far gone to convert back to an 870c, if you need a chassis I think I have a works one lying around you'd have a very good example of a works Yokomo then.

there are good examples of 870 cars around and if you don't see one now there will be one later to pick up. This one, I'm gonna agree with Phoenix on, would make a nice works car 8) . You're closer to that than going backwards anyway

Thanks for the input guys. You're all talking alot of sense, which i was going to ignore as i already have really nice '92 and its so similar to the '91 i didn't think it was worth it, and the 870 does have a special place in my rc history.

But then i thought bugger it, i'll do them both. I've been through my box of bits and reckon with the help of a few members on here that have already been in touch it should be do able. So watch this space :D

Belt question - are the belts for the 870 and the works 91(3mm) the same? I'm assuming they are as the running gear has all been mounted on an 870 chassis? and what part no.s do i need to be looking for?? Both cars will be runners so i'd like to replace the belts with new.

Check with Tough Belts, look in the vintage section, ORiginal Yokomo belts getting hard ot find at a good price. Tough belts are like 5 or 6 us dollars a piece.
