It's still possible to get cells for the batteries - IIRC they are 2/3rd AA (or AAA) NiMH. This will also give you a lot more drive time, as the vintage batteries that can still be found for these and Tamiya's Tamtechs tend to be rather dead due to their age - I think the one working pack I have works for like 5 minutes...badly.
My second-hand one uses a Sanwa Comras CP-R unit...

The nib one I have car with the Sanwa unit.
As far as batteries, I'm good with the one oem battery I have. If I do end up running one I will build a pack. When I was at the store last I saw several that looked dimensionally compatible
