My Losi XX CR Kinwald rebuild thread - updated now running

MIP part number for the Kinwald CVD's is A9923, they are the blue-ish coloured ones that came as standard with the Kinwald, not sure what the shiny CVD part number is.

Quick update, spent a few hours on the XX this evening. Changed the front shock tower for the Kinwald item, also did some work on front end inc installing some titanium nitride hinge pins and sorting out the front spindles. I found out that one side had a 25 degree arm, the other was a standard XX item, so need to get a new set of 25 degree arms. Also found that my carriers had the kingpin setup, so the top section for the ball stud is ground down. I read about this in the Kinwald manual as one of BKs setup options, it was an optional factory hop up. I'll have both setups when I finish available.

Rest of the time I spent taking stock of,further inventory, cleaning up some CVDs that I found, and figuring out anything further that I may need. Installed some bearings in front arms and rear hubs, and some titanium ball studs. Rest of the time I stripped down some bits from my XXX EA3, surprising how many parts seem to be similar.

I had already bought a shiny lt weight new motor plate, but I looked through some old bags to see if I could find another 25 degree spindle, and instead I found this and cleaned it up:



Happy to find the original Kinwald motor plate, think that's all I needed left of the original Kinwald parts. I have the blue springs and other bits. Till next time.......

The blue anodised motor plate is one of the main things that sets it apart from the rest of the pack so it's nice to see going back on.

I was always disappointed with the colour though as its more of an AE blue than Trinity blue...but still it'll look good with the AE screw kit

Did some more work on the XX, started to build the rear end. Found a 3 degree ally rear pivot block, think it may be a trinity part or something, does anyone recognise it:



To install the pivot block I had to slightly modify the pivot plate, had to dremel the front of it slightly. I didn't use my brand spanking new graphite plate due to this, will just keep it on ice for now. Installed with lower rear end, I need to find some shorter hinge pins in ti for the rear, to be continued:



Now to start work on the transmission. This transmission hasn't been opened or rebuilt in maybe 15 years:



I did manage to find a spare new half of the transmission case that was sheared off (you can see where it is damaged in the pic above). Looks like a slightly different material to the original, but it's the same size so I have used it. Some more shots of the transmission rebuild with new parts below. First for the transmission bearings, I do have new modern bearings for the transmission, but I stumbled upon this spare set of original Losi bearings NIP, I have had these sitting around for more than 15 years, so thought it would be rude not to crack open the packet and actually use them!:

Diff built and installed, I used tungsten carbide diff balls:



The outdrives above were actually changed as they didn't fit in the box, not sure what model they are from but I will probably sell them in future. They look new.

Dual disc slipper (originally was on the XX CR Kinwald) and original new Kimbrough spur gear installed:



I installed the rear hubs and driveshafts, I didn't end up using my MIP CVDs, I want to get them rebuilt and match the dog bones up (I have a mix of one alu, one polished, one black new and 2 used black) Next up are the original Lunsford titanium turnbuckles, cleaned up:



I did get hold of a set of blue RPM heavy duty rod ends, but since I've figured these are not the right length, so I will have to re-order the right length rod ends (same RPM blue). Built the rods for now with the shorter arms so I can get the kit built up. Anyway, as it stands currently with rear rods built and motor/slipper installed:





Next I need to get hold of some original front spindles A1121, some more ti hinge pins, looking out for one new MIP dogbone (either alu or shiny as I have one of each new). Host of other bits that I need to get, and I haven't started on the shocks yet. I have a bunch of wheels, but none new - you could get new blue wheels for the XX right? They may look good on this build!

I think I fell into the same trap from the same (ebay?) seller in regards to the RPM blue rod ends being too short...

Question guys: one side of the transmission case has damage on the bottom mounting screw, corner has snapped off. Can I find one side of a case easier than a whole case, I know they are hard to find now. Is the kinwald case different to a non kinwald case?

The only time you're ever likely to find one half of the trans case is either with a used XX or else part of some used parts lot. In both cases (no pun intended), there's probably a very good reason why it's not actually in use. The case itself is the same for all XX buggy's, i.e. it has an internal ratio of 2.19:1 so any will fit.

Yes, they are increasingly hard to find these days......and seriously expensive when you do so you may need to think about buying another complete XX (for the spares)......which is a bit of a pain but far cheaper in the long run.

There are some NIP A-3058 XX Trans Case Sets on eBay right now...

It's most definitely a Trinity part but I think that's the one for the XXX and not the XX. I have a Trinity XX rear pivot block fitted to my graphite build and no modifications were necessary.

It does,look similar, but it's not exactly the same as the part in the ebay link, the ebay part has 4 grub screw holes for the hinge pins, my one has two, ebay pic below to compare:

Here it is on the blister pack....you can just make out XXX after the part number

...but it will fit the XX as you've found out.

The XXX mount is narrower than the XX mount, it moves the pivot pins inboard more, hence the need to file the plate. You will need to use the outer holes on the 9802 wishbones to keep the same width.

I fitted a xxx one to my XXT and had to do the same.

Next instalment we go back to the front end. Steering as it came out of the XX:



Stripped down and cleaned up, old bits on right, new on left. Went for the trinity ball ends for steering:



First stage completed, notice the new bearing in place of the old plastic style bushing in the original kit.



Went for the XXX one piece link instead of the XX threaded rod with ends:



Installed in the chassis with the associated screws:



Next up is servo, for now I installed the old school kyosho perfex unit which was originally in the car, as I didn't want to cut another servo up:



All installed with original graphite brace and stiffener:



Next up are shocks. I'm thinking of going for the XXX threaded shocks for this build instead of just rebuilding the original XX version. May just rebuild both and see how it goes.

Ok thanks for the info, I do have some spare XXX VLA rear wishbones so could use them if slightly wider rear track is better for stability when running.
