K-TOWN-KITT'S RC-10T rtr economy build.

Post by K-TOWN-KITT »

I have been wanting to do a rebuild thread but it always seems whenever I get an RC in the mail I just can't control myself and start tearing the thing apart 5 minutes after I open the package. So I thought I might start the thread before I even recieve the RC. I also want to show how anyone can have a nice complete vintage RC-10T for little money. I'm going to try to rebuild the truck using just what I get in the package. I'm going to try to not go into my parts stash. If I do, I'm going to make a list. It looks like I'll need a front bumper, some shock spacers in the front shocks, a rear body mount, a battery tray, and some body clips. Please be kind. This is my first rebuild thread.
I won 3 auctions on ebay yesterday all from the same ebayer. An RC-10T truck with electronics , a lot of 14 wheels, and a used clear body. 8) $63.17 shipped Priority. 8) Dude lives just over 200 miles away.
I also won a Onyx 240 dual charger, a Prophet sport 2 charger, and 2 Onyx 3000 nimh 6 cell battery packs in 2 auctions from another ebayer for $28.32. shipped. (Dude didn't combine shipping ) I'm going to sell the Onyx 240 dual charger so the Prophet charger and Venom 3000 packs will be free and I might even be able to make a few dolars.

I recieved the truck today. Like 36 hour shipping. Oh boy. It's definately a diamond in the rough. Put a crystal and battery in the truck and all the electronics do work. Has a Novak 410-ms esc, Kyosho super stock motor , futaba 148 servo, and a futaba reciever. The gears are meshed real tight. Check out how they have the slipper clutch setup. Diff seems pretty good. Look at the antenna mount. A first for me. Going to go with the 3 piece wheels. Appears that goofoff paint remover is going to be my friend. Even the chassis is painted. The body has dried tape residue bad. Maybe I can get it off. worst case I'll paint the body on the outside. I'm feeling a bit lazy tonight so I'm going to start with the wheels.

I use methyl ethyl keytone or m.e.k. To remove paint. It does no damage and wipes off with a rag. Stay ventilated though. Nice score!
I'm not like them, but I can pretend...

Ok, should be all down hill from here. About 3 hours to get them clean. Not perfect. Still a little paint in the pits and scratches but still pretty nice. I cleaned all 4 of the painted wheels. I used the proline 92's with foam inserts that were on the front of the truck. The front tires are pretty soft too. I'm going to set aside the white 3 piece front wheels that were on the truck. They are minty. not a scuff.
Thanks for the advice on the solvents. Probably a little cheaper than the goofoff too. The goofoff works pretty good. I even use it with a wire brush and clean up turnbuckles and hardware.

Been busy this weekend but squeezed in about 5 hours of wrench time. I have the truck mostly apart. I cleaned up and out the shocks and filled them with fresh 40 wt. silocine oil. After uploading the pics I noticed I missed cleaning out the insides of the rear pivit balls and one of the screw heads. I cleaned up the chassis and got the sticker and paint off of it. I'm a little bummed about the sanded spots but would rather leave them and not paint over them.

Finished cleaning up most of the parts. everything but the stealth. Most of the hardware is gross so its going to be slow going building the truck back up.

Check these links for parts if you need them.

If your axles are chewed up I have some dogbones and axles I could ship to you for a few bucks. My truck was barely used when I got them so they are in excellent shape.

I need to off load them anyway since I bought CVD's.

I have been rebuilding RC-10's for years, probably a couple hundred by now, and have spares of just about everything. All used but all original and all vintage. I have always tried to keep my RC-10's, well at least the ones I sell, as original as possible. That also goes for different RC-10 models. I don't even want to put these tires and wheels on this truck because they are from an earlier model. Even something like the chassis on this rebuild. I would rather leave the chassis alone and not spray it. About a month ago I got a bunch of new rerelease parts in. I didn't even realize they were repops until a few members on here told me. I won't use them unless I get a rerelease in and when that happens it will be by accident. I appreciate the fact that you are trying to help and even offered up some parts. If you ever need any parts or just some advice just ask. Thank you.

I got a little further on the build. Still have to do the transmission and electronics. The body came out pretty good. I used Traxxas 33% nitro fuel on a soft towel to remove the crusty glue residue. Still a few hazy spots but definately better than what I started with.

If I need parts, I don't mind buying the new stuff if it's still made. I don't want to pay more for older stuff, especially if I could buy the same part new, for less.

Thanks though.

Plus you couldn't tell the difference, so it didn't matter :D

I just finished up the truck. Far from perfect but a long way from what I had started with. Still need to test drive but had the truck moving around here in the hobby room. Bet it woud of gotten a few votes in the pos pole. :?:
