Australia- need advice for sight-seeing

Post by mk-Zero »

I'm going to be in Australia for about a week and a half in late March/early April for work and will have 2 days at the end to play tourist. Because of my travel arrangements, I have a choice of Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth to spend those 2 day in. Which would be "best" given only 2 days? FWIW, I like nature more than museums
Thanks in advance for any advice 8)

I'd say Queensland is the best but I am biased, Perth is a long way to go by plane, 4-4.5 hours from Sydney, Sydney is good for shopping beaches and getting stressed out, melbourne the same but a bit more casual and a lot more culture,
Can't really go wrong with either, if in Sydney catch a NRL league match or in Melbourne a AFL match, that will show you what real football is about

Personally I like Melbourne but will say as a tourist Sydney for the Opera House and coat hanger etc.

Just be warned, cigarette and alcohol prices are crazy.

Each location has it's attractions, good and bad points... so I'll do my best to add some of my own personal opinions.

Sydney
Good: As mentioned above, the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, Sydney Harbour, Bondi Beach. Lots to see and do, lots of tourist-themed stuff. Go sightseeing for where the Matrix was filmed....
Bad: Tourist prices, lots of grumpy people, not a lot of nature-type stuff unless you're prepared to day-trip to the Blue Mountains, northern beaches, or similar.

Melbourne
Good: Very relaxed people, very different feel to Sydney. Lots to see and do (Heallesville animal sanctuary, Yarra Valley wineries, the Great Ocean Road, Yarra River / Port Phillip Bay cruises). Prices lower than Sydney. Go sightseeing for where Mad Max was filmed....
Bad: Great Ocean Road would be better with more days, airport is a bit out of town, still pretty expensive, I no longer live there....

Perth
Good: Almost-constant good weather, lots to see and do (Fremantle, Rottnest Island, Mandurah, go swimming with dolphins at Monkey Mia). People so laid-back they often seem horizontal. Go sightseeing for where Windrider was filmed (look it up!)
Bad: Can be seen as a little expensive (even to the locals), a long way from anywhere, and everything is a bit of travel to get to. They speak a different language (nah, not really!). You may find places where Windrider was filmed....

There's plenty more.... but that should be a good start!

If i ever immigrate again it will be to Australia. Ya I have all those romantic views. But that's were i see myself dying. Next year in Australia!!! Yep Yep!!. :D I have never met an Australian I did not like. And strangely in my work I have met a few. But perhaps they were the smart ones that left it.

You should look up dj_kilroy (David) on this forum. He lives in Perth and might be able to make a few good suggestions. I know he mountain bikes so he'll be aware of what natural wonders around over that way.
