Carbon fiber Chassis Experiment

Post by myfordcnc »

Place holder for now. Opener to a carbon chassis. working on a buck and a vacuum system to pump out a few or many. Pics to come soon. This will run in tandem with the 4wd interpretation I'm working on. if it works out.

Subscribed.. I've been knocking around the idea of building a mold form and laying up a fiberglass tub for all my Ultima parts. I thought about making it as a blank so that it could be drilled and cut for RC10 components if desired.

I did this a couple of years ago. 25* blank buck, with upturned sides for fore-aft rigidity. Pulled a FG version as a test. Never got around to the CF versions tho. Life, adn too many other projects got the best of me  . One day I will get it done however.

Buck roughed out. I'll need to refine the dimensions and transitions and then fillet were fillets need to be.

Looks cool even like that. Someone started a thread on their own CF a few years ago, but I don't think they ever successfully completed it though. It was still a very cool thread. I look forward to seeing how this goes.

It wasn't CF he was working on, but still maybe an interesting read for you.

I had thought about making a positive out of an existing chassis. What I noticed (and this may just be the chassis set I have) is that the aluminum tubs are not very symmetrical.

I only have one new condition black b stamp chassis. And although it was better than the rest of my chassis sets it too was asymmetrical.

Also sides were not straight. I realize this has to do with the stamping processes but since I wanted to give myself the best chance of successes as possible I started from scratch.

It was interesting measuring up the old tubs since you discover that they used a lot of standard dimensions. Like the radius of the back is one inch. The inside depth is 1". The width at the back is 2 1/16". A bunch more dimensions like that.

Looking for an empty oxygen tank (like construction) to act as a battery to my vacuum system I'm putting together . If any body in my area has one to spare.
