The Ace was the car that killed off PBs involvement with 1/10 off road. PB and Schumacher started development of their first buggies together, but each had different ideas of which way to develop the transmission, so they went their separate ways. This is why The Mini Mustang and CAT had the same chassis layout and suspension geometry, but completely different gearbox ideas.Team Best Performance wrote:Very nice car.Any race history or handling/performance characteristics of those cars would be great!
The Mini Mustang came out first, was very successful and easily outsold the CAT as it was actually drivable by the average racer. Unfortunately for PB, Schumacher had the best drivers in the UK on their team and developed the CAT to a consistent winner. PB tried to keep up and brought out the Maxima to try and compete, but it couldn't beat the CAT on the track so it wasn't a big seller. To come up with a replacement as they couldn't beat the CAT with a similar car (why stop running your CAT to change it for a car looking exactly the same) PB went back in time to copy the chassis layout that was successful 5 years earlier with the Optima, the idea being the car would be easier to drive so would be popular amongst club racers. Unfortunately for PB, club racers want the best and everyone saw it as a huge step backwards, the Ace made the Maxima seem as successful as the Hornet.
As for race history even though PB had Glyn Peglar (one of the UKs top buggy drivers at the time) after the early days of the Mini Mustang the PB buggies never won anything. The Ace had the best quality parts but the car was worse than its predecessors in all areas on the track. Within months of going on sale PB were selling these at less than half price to get rid of them.

This is the Mini Mustang first 4wd 1/10 offroad electric car from PB RACING, some drivers use in 2wd.
After it's the MAXIMA ,same chassis with differents shocks mounts, and use too in 2wd...
And after the ACE.

Re: PB Racing ACE resto
I bought one of these cars when I was 16, they had just come out. I remember it being very quick in a line (all PB cars were) but I really struggled with it on the track.
I bought a Mid after that, which was an absolute dream to drive. Still, I do love these old PB's!

Re: PB Racing ACE resto
Very nice ACE you have there.
The PB Mini Mustang was a really good solid racer. Ahead of it's time for a while being a single belt drive .
Ceciel Schumacher had a big part in it's design before they had a fall out. In saying that PB didn't improve on it much. The Maxima was better in some ways & worse in other ways to the mini mustang.
At our track they went slower due to the suspension package not being able to work in the roll centers.
The Ace must be a rare car now but not one for me. It's bad enough i have a mini mustang as i hated them so much ( too quick for me to race against

Re: PB Racing ACE resto
Having built, rebuilt, driven and slightly modified both Mini Mustangs and Maximas I can honestly say they aren't a bad rig. There were some definate weaknesses but with those now addressed I am proudly confident in saying these cars work well.
Even so, I don't choose these types of 80's racers for their superior performance but rather the nostalgic value. I think they can all be made to work so I would say that with a positive attitude, a little knowledge and the will power anything is possible.
Will this make a PB buggy better than any other? Who knows, but for me that's not what it's all about.
I love them all regardless of how ugly or inefficient some may think them.
