I'm in for any of the custom aluminum parts you can have created. Here is a link to a pic that shows a custom aluminum bulkhead:

From Walt.
If you can mail/foot-express/send via trained squirrel the parts you're thinking of redoing, I can find the time to measure them/throw them on the CMM and get a solid model made up.
In essence, if you can get me a plastic version of part X, I can make it metal.

Would have to wait a bit, right now I'm up to my elbows in stuff for my engine, and some other projects.

Cost to make them? To be honest it depends on the complexity of the part, the price of stock, and the time needed, so It would vary by part/job/etc. If it requires actual design, instead of just reverse engineering, then the cost shifts up to compensate.

Depending on how many are made, the design cost will even-out and unit price decreases.

That's the basics.

Some stuff also would not be feasible for me to make at a competitive price, since I don't have the scale to make 4000 of them, or the means to create them.

I'm interested in hearing what you have in mind!

A rear 3* arm mounts will also be awesome, but dont have a part to send for measurement :-(.

Just a heads up, talked to Walt. He's been trying to register on this site. Think the site believes he's a spambot or something. One of the questions asks what kind of RC car he has/had. He answered honestly and said he's not owned a real RC yet. I don't know if this is the issue. PM'd Scr8p...see what he has to say.

Most anything in aluminum would be nice, but one part comes to mind: the exposed bearing on the 6-gear tranny. Years ago, there was a company called Racemaster that made aluminum ones with a flange that you could put a cap from a motor brush tube (remember those?), and it kept the dirt out.
The older I get, the faster I was.

That would be neat. I do have the six gear in my car. Whenever Walt gets free to look at these cars, I'll have to point that out.

Hello, mic check, is this thing on?

First off, I'm a newb when it comes to pro-grade RC, closest thing I have is a chinsy scale model all-plastic monster truck that I got second hand, after it was ran through a puddle and the reciever boards voltage regulator popped, dumping batt voltage into the rest of it. It's slowly turning into a robot, but I digress.

Oh, and as far as getting anodized parts back to raw aluminum, you can soak them in a lye solution till the anodizing breaks down and the coloring dye leaches out. The dimensions will change, but only slightly, might not pose any problems, might be a deal breaker. You'd be left with a dull grey "distressed" part that could be re-polished.

Gah, tangents yet again!

So yeah, I'm Walt, I'm a stones throw from Johnboy (if you're a giant like goliath, in actuality ~ 65 miles), and I offer design, prototyping, and short run manufacturing services on a quoted basis.

I feel like all eyes are on me, heh heh...

From what Johnboy has said and from what I can see of the conversation over here, there's an interest in recreating the injection-molded plastic gearbox housings in aluminum for reduced wear, increased reliability, and the fact that it's awesome to see aluminum in place of plastic.

Since I have very little experience with these cars, I'll need your help to make this all happen.

If someone can give me a better idea of what everyone would like, we can get a start on this.

Phew, what a first post that was...
Walt

welcome Walt. Yep, aluminum tranny housings, rear arm mounts in different degrees and I'm sure quite a bit more if the pricing is right. Checked thru your project that is listed elsewhere with the mercedes motor in your d50 and was impressed with the time and effort that went into it so far. Look forward to updates there and also to some ideas and quotes on prices for this stuff we are after here. Glad you could become a member here and as far as the hobby grade rc goes if you picked up an rc10 and got it goin with Johnboys help you'd be hooked and be forgetting all that 1:1 stuff
