Yep, that's right. 63.5mm, are you sure about that? I've seen 60.5, 62.5, 65.5 and longer...but 63.5mm doesn't sound familiar to me...myk wrote:-Edit, by cross pin you mean the small pegs that are perpendicular to the shaft, that fit into the hub? In that case I'm measuring 63.5 mm-no fit for me...

Re: W5061 Universal Swing Shaft
Well I got 2.5 inches from the center of the "ball" part of the dog bone to the other center of the "ball" on the opposite end of the dog bone, which translates into 63.5mm. I take it I'm measuring from the wrong spots?Coelacanth wrote:Yep, that's right. 63.5mm, are you sure about that? Are you mounting the set you bought into an Optima Mid? If you are, and they fit, then they should fit in my 'O-mid as well.
Meanwhile, I just picked up a set of HPI 3031's for the car. I hope they fit too...

Re: W5061 Universal Swing Shaft
I've mounted the 62.5mm and 60.5mm units in a Turbo Optima (non-Mid). The stock dog-bone size was 62.5mm front & rear, pin-to-pin. I know the Mids are different, which is why I suggested measuring. I wasn't expecting a size of 63.5mm because I've been watching Kyosho dogbones on eBay for a while and never saw one that was 63.5mm. Since the cross-pins are about 1mm thick, if you measured from the outsides of the cross-pins, you might get a 63.5mm length. If you measure with a caliper from the middle of the cross-pins, do you get 62.5?
Those HPI 3031's should fit nicely.

Re: W5061 Universal Swing Shaft
Yeeeah about a caliper, lol. I'm just going to have to gamble on it as my tool inventory isn't any better than it was in '88, lol. I'll bet it's 63.5mm and I'm just the only Asian that isn't any good at numbers, ha ha.Coelacanth wrote:I've mounted the 62.5mm and 60.5mm units in a Turbo Optima (non-Mid). I love your project cyanide-that's top shelf work right there. Thanks for answering my questions too. Stumbling back into r/c 20 years later leaves me with alot of puzzles.

Re: W5061 Universal Swing Shaft
Thanks myk! Hey, here's that 65.5mm set I mentioned earlier. As far as I know, there's no Kyosho CVD set in a size between 62.5mm and 65.5mm. I could be mistaken, but I've never seen one.myk wrote:I love your project cyanide-that's top shelf work right there. Thanks for answering my questions too. Right, earlier in this thread, I mentioned there were dogbones in sizes 60.5, 62.5, 65.5 and larger...but never saw any measuring 63.5.

Re: W5061 Universal Swing Shaft
You're correct about that. Additionally, however, according to retromodelisme.com, the same OT-6 dogbones are used with the Ultima and Ultima Pro, so it stands to reason the W5061's would also work for *those* cars. (They're also listed as an option part in the manual.) Secondly, my suggestion of the LA245 CVDs was because they're both cheaper (the ones I linked anyway) and better-designed than the simplistic U-joint design of the W5061.aip47-2008 wrote:W5061 universals were designed as an option part to fit all Optima series 4wd vehicles!!!!Coelacanth wrote:You'll have to measure your existing dogbones from cross-pin-to-cross-pin. If they work better than the standard dogbone I'm in! Are they for the front or the rear?

And, although this is getting a bit repetitive, the pin-to-pin length of the LA245 CVD is exactly the same as the OT-6 dogbones/W5061 U-jointed shafts -- 62.5mm. I have installed them in my Turbo Optima and they work perfectly, you just need to change from the press-fit 12mm hexes to the ones that use cross-pins. Who wouldn't want a superior alternative and save a fiver in the process?

Aaron, wasn't it you that sold me a set of these LA245 CVDs?

W5061 universals were designed as an option part to fit all Optima series 4wd vehicles!!!!
Press fit hubs. Pardon my ignorance but would you happen to have pictures of the two types?

Re: W5061 Universal Swing Shaft
The stock hubs are what the Optima/Ultima use now; the only thing keeping them from spinning when your motor pushes the axles is the contact between the angled part of the axle shaft & the tapered hole inside the hubs. I learned with today's modern batteries & motors, this might not be enough to keep your wheels from spinning off the nylon lock-nuts. It's happened to me.myk wrote:Press fit hubs. Switching to hubs that stay locked in place with cross-pins that go through the hole in the axle shafts (as the LA245 units have) is bullet-proof. There's no way the wheel will spin off, unless the wheel or hex breaks. The difference is they don't have the tapered hole on the inside, and probably won't work with the stock W5061 U-joints or stock axle shafts.

Oh wow, ok. Looks like you showed me a modern advancement for my O-Mid that I would never have thought of myself. So, all I have to do is buy a set of those new hex-hubs and those special u-joints that you linked to and that should do it?Coelacanth wrote:The stock hubs are what the Optima/Ultima use now; the only thing keeping them from spinning when your motor pushes the axles is the contact between the angled part of the axle shaft & the tapered hole inside the hubs. Re: W5061 Universal Swing Shaft
Does anyone know if the W5061 or the LA245 CVD will work in a Kyosho Rocky? If not, why? If not sure, would someone measure the diameter and length of the stub axle part?
The Rocky Dogbones are 62.5mm center to center of the pins. Option House did have them for the Rocky with part number W5062 but are hard to find even on ebay.

Re: W5061 Universal Swing Shaft
I can maybe answer both your and myk's questions later, I'll measure the total length of my LA245 CVDs. We already know the dogbone length is identical for Rocky/Optima (62.5mm).esaresky75 wrote:Does anyone know if the W5061 or the LA245 CVD will work in a Kyosho Rocky? If not, why? Here's some info I dug up on the W5062's...man those are beautiful! Never saw those anywhere. However, it says they fit Optima, Ultima, Sideways, Lazer ZX, Turbo Optima Mid SE, Ultima Pro...so if you say they'll fit the Rocky, that's telling me that the Rocky dogbones are the same as the Optima. These W5062 just appear to be gold-colored versions of the W5061. If anyone else can confirm this, that would be great--I've never seen or owned the 5062's so I can't be certain.
