New guy with an SC10

Post by andymac0035 »

Hi everyone!

I've been checking out the site and decided to join. (blame Halgar)

I have an SC10 and I'm trying to decide how best to set it up. I don't race, this is to be a backyard basher with some time spent in empty parking lots.
I've had it since January. I really like how it handles compared to my other R/C's. I've been out of R/C for a while, but now I'm back and trying to learn as much as I can. (I'm already in way deeper than I ever was before).

I now have (in order since I got them):
SC10, Super Clod Buster, Slash, Rustler

The Reedy radon died.....replaced with another (similar) motor.....that died....
Replaced that with a 21T 550 and that was fine, but slow.
The stock XP200 esc......the adjuster button is stuck and I can't make adjustments to it. (is there anyway to fix this?). I got this truck used, so no warranty.

Today I put a traxxas XL5 in it with a 12T titan 550 (much better).

It doesn't look this shiney and perfect now, but I wanted to post a pic. :D

*EDIT* after re-reading my post I hope no-one thinks I just mercilessly beat on this truck. The backyard looks more like a construction site and is pretty much the perfect off-road playground with lots of jumps and hill-climbs......but also rocks and rolls (over that is). The guys on clodtalk refer to it as "clodbuster paradise".

Oh, and I wanted to ask.....
I had to make a spacer plate up to mount the 12T 550.
(I had actually shortened the shaft on the 21T to clear the gearcase cover).
(but I didn't want to have to keep doing that)

I used a fiber washer and a thick metal washer. The metal washer must be steel as it is drawn to the motor magnets (the fiber washer is between the metal washer and the motor).

Is this okay?

(this may seem like a silly question, but I really would like to know if it matters)

Me again.......

I also wanted to say that I've been flirting with the idea of putting brushless in it.

I was given a VXL rustler for my B-day. I thought it was just waaay too unstable (it was already hopped up too)(lots of metal parts).......so I swapped it's powertrain with my slash (has the pro line suspension upgrade) and I like that MUCH better. I'm trying different suspension set-ups with that (and I'm gaining on it).....but originally I had wanted to put the BL set-up in my SC10.

The problem I have is that my local hobby shop carries mostly traxxas stuff. If I break my slash or rustler I can usually get parts easy.....if I break something on the SC10.......it's order and wait.

Anyway......I think I've rambled on long enough.
Looking forward to some feedback.

the washers should be fine for the motor. buy the rpm bumper/chassis brace and enjoy the truck.

I've been messing with the gearing in my SC10. I swapped in a 75 tooth spur and a 26 tooth pinion....just to see how fast it would go on hard surfaces. And yup.....I burned up the 12T because I foolishly ran it on dirt towards the end of the runtime.

I now have a 21T titan 550 and it ran good with that and the same gearing. I then dropped down to a 23 tooth pinion and that seems even better.

I added the RPM bumper (I think it looks good on there).
As you can tell by looking at the tops of my fenders....I like to jump it a lot.
Split-6 wheels and pro-line bow ties are now out back.

i jus recently picked up an sc10 as well and looooooooove too jump
the rpm front end kit is a must...u mite want to pick up the a arms as well...factory team shocks are a lil better than the stock ones...i have both hard to stay away from that blue...also if u go brushless youll never go back...the hobby is much more fun when u go brushless
i run a novak 3's with the 8.5 motor and a 25pinion and 87spur, havent heated it up yet so ive stuck with that...i bash mine as well as run on our backyard track its basically a jumping track...also titanium turnbucles atleast for the rear...the stock ones bend up pretty easy...Lunsford makes some life time warranty ones or the factory team ones are good too...

Ill post a cuple pics of what ive done to mine
Good Luck with ur car...Brett

Both trucks look good. I would go with the rpm set up as well. You really can't go wrong there.
