Project Sand Scorcher

Post by Bimdapogs »

Who doesn't want a Sand Scorcher?! One of the most collectible model ever made by Tamiya. I always wanted one but even with the re-res at $300, it still isn't cheap. So the plan was to find a roller at a good price..

3 months after getting a bodyset, this chassis showed up in the local classifieds for a whopping sum of $40.

It's a Rough Rider chassis, an early one with a black bumper. I remember these bumpers go for a bit of money then, before the re-res. The condition was better than I expected with only some radio box parts missing.

I'm all ears for paint scheme ideas. So far I'm thinking Baja style stripes like Shodog's 4wd scorcher or similar to Tamiya's Toyota Prerunner..

I need:
Radio box cover
Cam-locks
2 Well nuts
Front body post

So if anybody has these parts, please let me know. This should be a fun project! It's my first SRB.

The re re parts are dirt cheap. I've seen complete radio boxes with camlocks for under $20. JR-RC on ebay is a good source for parts http://stores.ebay.com/Jasons-Store__W0QQ_sidZ8173167?_nkw=sand+scorcher

Update! Gave the chassis a thorough cleanup. Happy to see that parts are still in excellent condition, probably hardly been run..

Here she is now. Trying to make it look not too flashy and shiny to get that vintage look.. Still waiting to complete the radio box parts and body will be painted soon..

This car probably is from the very early batch, note (1) the serrated bronze bushing, (2) rear arm double bearing recess, (3) 2 X 2mm screws on the suspension tower for suspension spring rate adjustment, (4) no hole on the motor pinion gear cover.

Good find.

Very nice score! I want to get a rerelease to drive... As a VW nut, & yes I mean NUT! I think its the most realistic RC VW ever made.
More on the Nut part you say? Well lets start with the fact that i own a 66 baja, a 64 (thats on its way to becoming a custom trailer for behind my baja) & a 65 parts car. & ive owned 10 others in the past. now on to toys, I literly have over 3000 different VW toys, including a couple monster beetles. & several thousand other VW collectables (signs, pictures, key cahains, clocks lamps, etc.)
