rick, you don't need to have a 17.5, a 27t brushed stocker is plenty of power for a 2wd buggy and can easily run with almost any fwd only esc.
personally I'm not concerned with wining the race, because like you given how infrequently I race it is not likely to happen. I go because it is fun to get together with the other vintage rc nerds to play with our toys for a couple days.

I agree I dont expect to win, but I dont like getting slaughtered either. I went to the Vornats unprepaired, I raced with Brandon and Mark. it wasnt pretty, they are great drivers with top notch equipment. the only stock stuff I have is in my 12L. so I am going to haft to buy a motor and speed control anyway. so it just makes sence to me to just buy a brushless one. not a big deal I have that under control.

crp dynamite tall spikes seems to be the tires of choice.

I've raced there on a weekly basis for the past 2 years, and the tires of choice are:

Fr --
JC rounders in green
JC groovies in green
Losi tapers in pink
Calipers(4wd/truck), Double Dees(4wd/truck), Proline Edge M3(truck)

Rear --
JC double dees in green best all around tires, swept or dusty.
JC flipouts in green, better under dusty conditions.
JC goosebumps good all around tire. Slowest of all the rear tire choices, but very forgiving when you get out of that race groove.
Losi BK bars in pink, fastest combo so far at RCHR, under perfect conditions.
Calipers

All of the above tires work very good at RCHR, the JC doble dees are the best all around tire though.

How much does the track change in any given race? What type of prep do they do?

If the track is well swept after every race and sprayed a bit with water in between heats, it should be a double ds and bk/tapers type of conditions.

If the track is just swept mildly and not wet down, double ds/flipouts/goosebumps, work really well.

Last year everyone pitched in and swept when they were supposed to, so the track remained consistent throughout the whole event. I doubt it'll be any different this year.

RCHR stocks all the above named tires, just in case you don't like the tires that you bring.

For Associated:
Front -- 30 - 35 wt -- Associated
Rear -- 25 - 35 wt -- Associated

For Losi:
Front -- 32.5 - 37.5 wt -- Losi
Rear -- 27.5 - 32.5 wt -- Losi

the best way to find out what you need is at the track, these are just ball park figures that I've used on my own cars.
