Help a lost addict (everything changing) Lipo and brushless

Post by nvxwax »

Ok its been many years since I have run RC cars and have recently got back into collecting some cars I always wanted as a kid (About 20 so far lol).

My dilemma is trying to figure out lipo batteries, chargers and brushless systems.

I have a range of cars id like to run around the yard but have no clue what to install in them without costing an arm and a leg. I do not race, just run around the yard.

I’d like to make things kinda universal when it comes to batteries and brushless systems as much as possible. The short list of cars I would like to run.

Axial SCX10 (Has a Venom Motor 17 turn motor and a Duratrax 8T esc)
Traxxas Bullet (Project listed in the Traxxas section)
RC10 B4
Losi XXT
Tamiya Clod (Clodzilla Chassis)

I have been thinking of getting the parts listed below.

Charger:
Thunder AC6 Smart LiPo Balance Charger/Discharger

Batteries:
Venom 40C 7.4V 5000mAh 2S LiPo: Hardcase X 3

Brushless systems:
EZRUN-35A-SL brushless ESC with 1200kv motor (Axial SCX10)
EZRUN-60A-SL brushless ESC with 4000kv motor (Traxxas Bullet)
EZRUN-60A-SL brushless ESC with 4000kv motor (RC10 B4)
EZRUN-60A-SL brushless ESC with 4000kv motor (Losi XXT)
I have no idea for the Clod, It has a Novak racer esc and two brushed motors in it so I might leave it

Will I be able to use the batteries in all cars and would the brushless systems work in the cars? I think I also need a lipo cutoff for for the older esc’s right.

Any help would be appreciated , Thanks

That should work fine on all counts. I don’t know much about the Axial though. I would definitely leave the Clod the way it is. You should be very happy with all of that. Just get a nice 2.4ghz radio with plenty of model memory and plenty of receivers. I would get a range of brushless motors if possible. Those 4000kv will be beasts. I’d get a couple of 2200kv or so to mix it up. The lipo/brushless stuff will blow your mind. Welcome back! 8)

I would go with a sensored system if EZ-run makes them. A sensored system is smoother and does better at low speeds. Sensorless has a tendancy to "cog" when taking off from a stop.

Theoretically that’s true, but all my stuff is sensorless and I’ve never had any issues. I’m not arguing, but just speaking from my own personal experience. The crawler maybe…

I’m thinking I will keep the current 17T brushed motor in the SCX10, I looked at the EZRun crawler system on a Axial and was not impressed at all. I use it more as a trail rig not a crawler.

Any opinions on a decent ESC with reverse for a brushed motor that will not break the bank.

The XERun are the sensored offering, They cost 25% -50% more. I think I will get one EZ-Run setup and see how it does and if it does not perform to my likeing I will try one of the XE-Run systems.

I think I will get a 4000kv and around a 2500kv for a little verity As stated by THEYTOOKMYTHUMB . Have to start somewhere to see how they perform.

Any opinions on other brand batteries, ESC’s and BL Motors? Nothing expensive

Any opinions on the Mamba Sidewinder ESC 5700 & 4600? Price is a little higher but not to crazy, Can you run any other KV motor with a sidewinder?

The Thunder AC-6 is a great charger. I have one and I have had no issues with it. The manual has some funny translations in it but nothing that will keep you from knowing how to use it.

Venom batteries have a mixed reputation. Some swear by them while others swear at them.

As far as ESCs and motors....I run Novak Havoc and I am very happy. The new Reedy XP-SC540-BL setup is really appealing. AE uses them in their B4.1 and T4.1 RTR combos. Tower has them for $115 for a complete system, from 3300kV up to 6100kV. I thinking about using this system in my RC10T.

I just got back into RC after many years as well. The technology is crazy. It was a bit intimidating at first but it is so much better! 30+ minutes runs on one battery? Incredible.

Welcome back.

I just got the Reedy 4900 combo for my RC10 project. My local LHS had it for $103 (all sizes). Also, the LRP Eraser brushless combos are fairly inexpensive, I have the 3300 (13T?) set up for my Yokomo 870c and love it.

I've been using Venom hard pack saddle batts for the Yoke (4800 mah) and just picked up a 5000mah soft pack for the rc10. Relatively inexpensive for their sizes (under $60 each).

the EZ Run stuff is cheap and tempting, but i own a system, and it has a BAD BAD cog when going from stop to full throttle. REALLY annoying, i stopped using the system. after i read a bunch of similiar problems online from people. go with the low end novak, couple extra bucks but they arent bad.
