Ultima runner

Post by rangerg »

Just finished my Ultima runner. It's a Turbo Ultima with a few Option House extras (for example ball diffs) so I called it Ultima 1989. It was fun to restore and I used this website and Tamiyaclub for help, thanks.
See pics below.

Take care.

Thanks, I'll get some more pics. I have restored a Turbo Scorpion and a belt-drive standard Optima, but I tend to sell them once I finish them. I guess I like the restoration more than the running :-). However, I had a Turbo Ultima as a teen, so this one I'm keeping. I want to someday restore an Optima Mid.

Update: I ran it for awhile and now it's a shelf queen. New wing, body, and a few newer parts. See pics.

The top plate is a JG fiberglass one that I dyed black, I like the way it turned out.

Thanks guys. I have some platinum shocks that I want to clean up and switch on it. I think they will look great with the silver, black, and green.

Do you see the aluminum wing in my Ultima pics? Any idea what brand it is? I really like it, but it didn't come NIB - so I don't know what kind it is. Is it a Thorp Dirt Burners for the Optima? I believe I got it on an Optima.

Your "runner" looks like many here's shelf material Ranger!.. I'm surprised I missed commenting on this before. Like the new take on the Ultima Pro box scheme. I have a JG plate on mine, and am considering a dye job. I could go blue or orange to match the body, or black. Does yours have a glossy sheen to it post- dying?

Thanks for the comments. It was a runner. I had restored it from two donors. I ran it indoors or sidewalk and then took it out and ran it one time around the dirt track. I just couldn't make it a true dirt runner, the bottom of the car is too nice. I took it back apart, cleaned it up, and made it a shelfer.

I do want to add platinum shocks, but they are going to make it so close to the body that I'll probably have to recut, so I have been putting it off.

The dye looks good. I was really pleased with the way it looks. It is real shiny (glossy sheen as you say) on the top. I wasn't sure how it would turn it because those jg parts are not white.

I was curious about the sheen so good to know. I didn't like the finish on some of my original Ultima Pro shock towers, so I sanded them down to make them matte/flat. I guess I could do that to the tray as well after dying.

Losiman,

The dye on the jg parts looks unique. I have dyed other parts before and this has a shine, but it is inside. Does that make sense? It is not so much a surface shine as below the surface. I like it, but I can see how it would be a love it or hate it deal.
