crawling and the scale 4x4 scene was well underway by the time the ax10 came out. what axial did was produce an outstanding rc crawler when no other companies seemed interested at all, and made it easy for anybody to get a comp level crawler without having to custom make one out of the typical tlt axles, stampede tranny, and custom chassis.

Here's my 2 cents:

1. Tamiya Sand Scorcher: grandfather of true scale R/C off road, multiple spin offs)...Check eBay in awhile?..$$$$ So good they had to bring it back from the grave.

2. RC10 (original): Took full scale off road racing tech & made it work in 10th scale..reliably

3. Tamiya Frog: (How many spin offs?...hmm, Blackfoot, Monster Beetle, Lancia, Brat, Mud Blaster...) In a way, it started the truck craze.

4. Kyosho Ultima: The Anti-RC10.....Like Coke vs. Pepsi, Chevy vs. Ford..(or maybe Toyota?) great off roader with a shelf life almost as long as the original RC10..probably the best suspension design of the day, too bad Kyosho ignored the obsolete transmission for years.. Now it's design lives on as HPI's Baja.

5. Losi JRX2: Added an innovative transmission that forced other manufacturers to re-think their designs. Props for attempting a unique rear suspension design. Also ushered in the "graphite" decade...48 pitch internals & a clutch.

6. JRXT: Made everyone jump on the (production) Bigfoot looking stadium truck band wagon when people got tired of dumping money into their Blackfoots & Monster Beetles.

7. Kyosho Inferno: Where would 4x4 1/8th scale off road or the ugly-ass Truggies be today if it wasn't for this "what the hell kind of car is that" look that was designed years ago. Oddly enough, didn't this chassis inspire the USA 1 & an 1/8th stadium truck years ago?...Hmm, Traxxas T-Maxx & Associated SC8 anyone?

8. Tamiya Hornet: Makes you feel kind of sorry for Tamiya. Probably one of the simplest designs for multiple manufacturers to rip off in the 80's. Even Traxxas ripped them off with "The Cat" back in the day.

9. Axial Scorpion: Probably one of the most unique vehicle designs on the market, it started a completely new form of R/C.

10. Traxxas Slash: "The look" finally caught on. Tamiya tried a scale stadium truck years ago that didn't hit. Losi & Associated couldn't get away from the big and bouncy tire look. With their Desert truck, Losi missed the boat. Now they have The Strike (which looks like a Radio Shack toy). Associated is obsessed with making contiuously weaker products and rushed the SC10 to market. The Slash nearly perfected value, with a bomb proof product that looks great & goes fast. Now everyone but Tamiya is ripping them off!

A very good list! I would like to say that the Inferno I would consider the one to be the most influential would be the Kanai 1. If I'm not mistaken, it was the first to run 3 fluid filled diffs (I could be wrong on that, but I do know Kanai was the one to pioneer the design). Which most all 1/8th scale buggy designs revolve around now.

I'll add the T Maxx and Revo to the list. Although I do not own either or even like the trucks, I will give them props for bringing nitro back into the limelight. If not for them, I do not believe we'd have a truggy class now. I guess this would fall under most influential, not must have IMO.

I'll also add the RC10/12L on there, Tamiya TA-01, and the Kyosho Optima Mid.

You're right.

I meant to give examples of significant (IMO) R/C production innovations that are so original, they appear to be copied in one form or another by other manufacturers...in my rant I failed to clairify. I don't even have a crawler, (yet) but I love this truck. I'm suprised Associated has yet to copy this one too.

  • rc10 - for getting myself and a lot of other started in real offroad rc racing.
  • bolink legends - great low budget spec racing that allowed new people to get started in rc at a low cost.
  • rc500 - 4 wheel independent suspension on an onroad car.
  • ttech predator - ultimate redesigned offroad racer unlike the competition.
  • atomic carbon s2 - bringing a real carbon fiber tub chassis back into offroad racing along with mid motor and 4 gear trans.
  • traxxas slash - another budget spec racer that has brought in a lot of new rc racers.
  • axial scorpion - finally a comp crawler without spending a small fortune on conversion parts.
  • tamiya clodbuster - one of the first real bashers.
  • ?
  • ?
sorry only have 8 on my list.

Here's my short and sweet list of most influential:

1. RC10 (1st generation gold tub) and the woman in bikini who gave Jay Halsey his trophy on advertisement of every RC Car Action Magazine
2. Sanyo Batteries (yup back then even the 1700 nicd cells were highly expensive)
3. Airtronics/Sanwa 3P radio (radio system had a computerized screen) although Futaba PCM was my favorite
4. Kyosho INFERNO (even if you couldn't afford one, you told yourself someday...you will.)
5. O.S. engines (made scale engines very reliable that you can actually bash the sh*t out of them)
6. Yokomo YR-4 touring (also known as free racing-this pioneer for parking lot racing)
6. Tamiya TA01 (Parking Lot racing was really free if you had one of these)
6. HPI RS4 (You owned the parking lot if you had one of these)
7. Masami Hirosaka (Need I say anything more...He is the Man, The Myth, The Legend...and he still looks the same like 20 years ago)
8. Tamiya Clodbuster (cheap, big and bulky...it made you want to climb things)
9. Novak T4 ESC (now where would we be if it wasn't for Mr. Novak and his ESCs, guess we would still be with Tamiya servo control resistor type regulator)
10. Tower Hobbies (back then, they carried everything...has good product support and had catalogs for free so that you can always make your Christmas wishlist)

Here is my list of most influential vehicles

1. Tamiya Sand Scorcher or Rough Rider. First mainstream off road vehicles
2. Tamiya Blackfoot started the monster truck craze.
3. Tamiya Bruiser started the scale crawling craze.
4. Rc10, does this need any explanation?
5. HPI RS4. The Tamiya Ta-01 started the touring car craze but the rs4 was a serious racer instead of a plastic toy.
6. Tamiya frog, hornet or grasshopper. Take your pick, one of the three was probably your first vehicle
7. T-maxx, bar none started the whole gas monster truck segment.
8. Clodbuster
9. Losi Mini-t
10. Baja 5B
