2009 auto engine of the year

Post by tizeye »

This year's winners are:

* 2-litre TFSI turbocharged DOHC I-4 (Audi A4)
* 3-litre TFSI supercharged DOHC V-6 (Audi S4)
* 3-litre DOHC I-6 turbodiesel (BMW 335d)
* 2.5-litre DOHC I-4 hybrid (Ford Fusion Hybrid)
* 3.5-litre EcoBoost turbocharged DOHC V-6 (Ford Taurus SHO)
* 2.4-litre Ecotec DOHC I-4 (Chevrolet Equinox)
* 4.6-litre Tau DOHC V-8 (Hyundai Genesis)
* 2.5-litre turbocharged DOHC H-4 (Subaru Legacy 2.5GT)
* 1.8-litre DOHC I-4 Hybrid (Toyota Prius)
* 2-litre SOHC I-4 Turbo diesel (Volkswagen Jetta TDI).

Only one V8 on the list and it's made in cough...cough..Asia..notice that there aren't alot of normally aspirated engines on the list..

I love mine(in a VW GTI though). Forced induction seems to be more of a necessity/standard these days than a luxury. Who needs all those extra cylinders and pushrod thingies when you can slap a turbo on to a small engine and get hp and fuel economy in a smaller space?

Know what you mean. Recently slapped a supercharger on my MX5 ("Miata" in the US) which more than doubled the horse power to about 230bhp/ton....goes like s**t of a shovel...

I just have to mention that this is a great use of the english language, and a term I had not heard before, but will be sure to use frequently now. Thanks for the chuckle :D

An a side not I have a WRX and that little H-4 banger with a turbo definitely gets and goes, it is however sluggish compared to the Twin Turbo 6 Cyl Dodge Stealth I was driving before it. The stealth was on her last leg and the wife wanted to make sure my car was more family oriented for the future so I picked up the WRX.

Theres no replacement for displacement. There is nothing like a tire roasting launch from V8 motor. The Corvette has a large V8 and still gets 28 MPG. None of my V6 or 4 cyl turbo cars any where near that MPG.

I agree with the fun of a v-8(which is why I am hoping that GM actually produces the camaro convertible), but for everyday driving a small displacement hi-tech turbo is a great thing. the 2010 vette is rated 16/26 and GTI is 24/32 city/highway.
now if I could only get golf practicality with corvette power levels. . .

Mine gets 25-40 city and 35-55 on the highway depending on throttle usage. Has 167 hp at the wheel dynoed. Does 0-60 in under 4 secs and only weighs 400lbs. Gotta love bikes. They are a lot more fun for the money. :mrgreen:

You guys do realize that overall efficiency (technology) of the complete system (engine) can result in increased output (power at the crank)? Don't you?
