Vintage electronic speed control

Post by HENSLO »

Anybody know anything about a Traxxas XL-1 speed control, like motor limit and what year it was released?
Thanks

Will the XL-1 work with other radio systems?

The XL-1 is a fully proportional reversing electronic speed control. It is compatible with other industry standard radio systems and uses a Futaba "J" compatible receiver plug. Properly geared, it can handle mild modified motors and up to 7 cell packs. Other specs are:

Peak current 150 amps
Nom. Current 75 amps
Voltage loss .021 v/a
Max input volt. 10v
BEC output 5.2v

What's the most powerful motor I can use with my XL-1 Speed Control?

The XL-1 can handle a wide variety of motors, assuming that the motor is geared properly. Generally, we recommend using motors with no fewer than 17 turns. When more powerful motors are used with the XL-1, more care must be used to prevent damage from overheating the speed controller. Things that cause the speed control to get hot include incorrect pinion gear size on the motor (too large), driving at low speed for extended periods of time, frequent forward/reverse "slams," and blocked cooling air flow. If you are using a modified motor which is drawing lots of current (amps), then check the temperature of the XL-1, the motor, and the batteries frequently. Read the other section in this FAQ about aftermarket motors and gearing.

Traxxas has a pretty good website. :)

As far as release date, it could be had in a Rad2 which was 1989 or so.... so I'd say right around then.

I can't believe they still make an ESC that has no brakes.
I think I have one that has blue heatsinks too-- came with an XL-1 Rustler.
They changed the logo at some point-- here's my original one:

That's a Rad2... it was between the Radicator (I guess some guys weren't manly enough for pink rims) and the TRX-1. Lots in common with the Hawk.

Also- this may be better suited in the Traxxas forums if the mods agree. ;)
