Kyosho Panoz LMP-1

Post by Brandon G »

Got this a while back from Mr. Lexan.

I have always liked the 1:1 version of this race car and was happy to get this one in newly built condition. 4wd belt drive chassis. A very interesting piece. More like a 1/9th scale size than 1/10th.

I hadn't seen this before, thanks for posting. I love the looks of dampers that sit between the arms instead of towering out of the car. Ithink that's part of the appeal ofan optima for example.

Has anyone other than myself and bscotti had the pleasure of hearing the 1:1 version run? Man, they sound freaking awesome. Hits you in the chest. Shwing!

Is the motor based on a Ford like in their street cars? Blown 4V 5.4 of some sort?

What uzzi said. No, the modular motors don't do the justice that the older push rod motors do. They have gotten better over time, but at the time that Panoz campaigned the one pictured, the modular motor wouldn't hold up. The originals were built and developed by Roush, then to Yates (the Roush part I am sure of, I can't remember the Yates thing or not). Superchargers don't hold up very well in sports car racing either.

Cool.

I did a ride along in one of the production based race cars at the milwaukee mile a few years back. Im pretty sure it was a pushrod motor. I was amazed at how well it handled. It almost made the car feel slow but I assure you it wasn't!!! I also met Rick Mears that day. What a great guy.

I thinking about it some more last night and trying to remember (it goes as you get older), but I am pretty confident that it was Yates whom took over building the motors for Panoz after Roush bowed out.... and of course now, they are one in the same: http://www.roushyates.com. I think the transition happened when Panoz went from the GTR (coupe) to the open cockpit you see pictured.

I wonder if they are still building the engines for the ALMS Panoz GT program.

Is Panoz even in the ALMS anymore? I know they do the 24hr stuff.

I would love to see what you did working at Roush! As you can see by my handle im a bit of a Ford/Mustang fan lol. Jack and Carrol are two of my heroes! I have a set of Roush valve covers on my race truck and get asked all the time by my competitors if its a Roush motor. I just smile and say catch me if you can.

Do you happen to know Russ Warnermont. I doubt thats how his last name is spelled. He is Scott Taylor's crew chief who has run Roush motors for years. There has been a rumor that Roush won't let anyone but their own people touch Scotts motors. Any tuning or repairs need to be done by them. Scott or the team doesn't have anything to do with it. Its probably BS but maybe you know something about it?

Panoz runs in the GT2 class in the ALMS. http://www.ptgracing.com/

I was not on the Motorsports side of the business at Roush..... a 2/3 of the revenue Roush received (at the time I was there, 1997 - 2007) came from being an OE supplier to Ford, GM, Chrysler, and some others. I was on that side of the biz and worked primarily for Ford SVT on the Cobra, Lightning, and a number of their concepts. Toward the end of my tenure, I worked on some military programs and the last Ford program I worked on before I left was the SVT Raptor (their off road pre-runner). Lots of good memories and I can honestly say I can go to the grave proud of what I worked on. I have boxes full of memories, pics, posters, and some extra special things that are one of a kind.

That name doesn't ring a bell. I knew a couple of names at the engine/machine shop, but they were primarily management level.

I am Mustang guy myself. I have owned 4..... I still have two, I gave my dad one, and sold the other (I regret that sale). The two I have are a '66 I-6 that was my mom's, been in the family since brand spanking new. The other is my baby, an original '67 GT500 (it's apart at the moment).
