Associated 1/18th scale?
Associated 1/18th scale?
I'm just getting back into the hobby after leaving in the late 80's. Back in the late 1970's or early 1980's, I recall buying an rc airplane magazine (that was all they had back then) and seeing a one or two page section they had devoted to rc cars. The article was an interview with one of the founders of Team Associated and it talked about how they got their start. At this time I believe they were only making 1/8th and 1/12th scale on road cars but it showed a small picture of either Gene or Roger holding a small prototype rc car in their hand. If I remember correctly, it was a 1/18th scale rc car.
A couple of years ago, I went down in my parent's basement to look for the old article and was disappointed to see that my parents had thrown the rc airplane magazines out (but kept most of the rc car magazines). I contacted Associated to see if they had an memory of this car and they said that it must of been a slot car. Does anyone have any knowledge of this car or the article?
Thanks
DirtDiver
Ps- I still have my first rc car that I got for Christmas in 1984. It was an RC-10 which my father ended up building after Christmas dinner and made my mother very mad. The next day, she made my father go to the hobby store and buy me another RC-10 that I could build myself.

I finally found a picture of the Associated 1/18th scale on-raod car from late 1981. Photo appeared in Feb 1982 issue of Radio Control Modeler. If anyone has information on these cars or know where one is located, I'd like to see/hear more about them.

Check out the pictures of the second Associated 1/18th car (Cliff Lett's car) at Ask Gene Hustings.

That was a custom car built by Curtis Husting, it never made it to production but it looked great and was quick! It had a pan car chassis similar to the RC12e/i from that period. I think Curtis custom made the body mold out of wood and pulled a few prototype bodies. Curtis painted a lot of the cars you see on the cover of the AE kit boxes, including the original RC10, RC12E etc.
