TRX 1 Setup

I have a TRX 1 that I intend to run through the winter here in the UK.
What I would like is a good base starting point : ie
Shocks, what pistons front and rear
what wt oils and springs, although the spings I have are not coloured
what length shock shafts, limiters inside/outside
camber link positions
Plus anything else that might be relavent

don't think anyone can tell you much without proper knowledge of the track.
My advise 'd be to go out there and have a feel at some of the competitors cars; the ones which are running well and have the same basic configuration (like B4's). Se the toe-in, camber changes, feel the dampening, check rideheights and copy it to the best you can

Hi Ken,

The TRX-1 is very adjustable and responsive to tuning, especially on modern rubber.

My problem at the moment is lack of pistons. I have the: Two notch pistons, but nothing else. They are simply to big. AE, losi pistons etc are to great a dia to fit the TRX bodies.

So! I'm running AE shocks all round - T4 front, B4 rear. They fit rather well.

#3 fr - 40wt, Green spring

#2 rr - 30wt, Green spring

This is until I can find or make some pistons to suit. AE shocks are a known quantity and work well.

Ride hight, arms level.

Castor 25 deg. 1 deg anti squat. Toe +2

Tyres were X2k red and 8175 M3. Track was sticky red clay.

TRX-1 has the unique Malibu handling, seems to like the smaller piston combo.

Just some ideas, Mr. Ed's advice probably holds more water.

Good thread though, I'm keen to hear some tips and tricks as well.

if you take the losi or associated pistons, and stick a nut and bolt through it, snugged down, you can stick it in a drill, and use sandpaper or a very sharp file to turn the outer diameter down to fit into traxxas shocks, if you wanted to make your own.

you could, but you better use a high quality caliper to get them equal sized

all you have to do is stack two pistons, and use a flat surface with the sandpaper. they'll be practically identical.

I just though about this.......I bought some shocks recently from tower, to replace missing ones on a blue eagle. they came as a kit with all the peices, so the pistons are probably still available.

I had one of these cars back in 92 and as far I can remember ran it with all kit parts,
that,s what I intend to do.
I have a full set of pistons, I,ve also fitted the longer shock shafts front and rear
but have too much droop (down travel) on the rear so shorter shafts required.
The tracks I will use the car on are astro turf which can be very grippy when dry
and very slick when wet.

The Fuhrer when you say:" Two notch pistons, but nothing else. They are simply to big."
would the single notch pistons be worth a try?

Hi Guys, good tips on the pistons.
I guess you could also use a resin/glue to fill the notches and redrill.

Ken,

I only have the two notch pistons remaining. Even with 60wt oil they are too soft! The shocks are awesome, it's just my lack of pistons.
The one notch pistons may be the ticket, well worth a try.
Not sure on the AE/Losi equivalent. Perhaps a Losi blue - Ae #1?

As you can see though, I'm running #3 with 40wt on the front. On a high grip surface that even seems too soft. The car is fun to drive none the less!

There is an astro turf track opening in Melbourne soon, will keep you posted.

This is what I,ve done to get the feeling of the shocks close to how the RC10 ones "feel"
Front : 1 notch pistons, Losi 40wt oil
Rear : 1 notch pistons , Losi 35wt oil
Tried Losi orange front springs which felt good, but any Losi rear springs (Red ,Pink)were too long
Looking through other cars I have came across Tomy Intruder springs, the fronts are very similar to
the Losi orange and the rears are similar to Losi pinks.
Next is to fit the electrics so that the ride height can be sorted and then drop test to see how the car settles.
Get the body painted ready for the fist meeting early November

Hopefully I,ve managed to attach a couple of pictures of my progress, yes they are TRX3 wheels
Seems sucessful apart from the light reflection of the bodyshell

Ran the car today mainly on astro turf and small areas of tarmac and dirt
Track was damp and greasy(slick) same tyres all day schumacher green slim on the front
Ballistic green spike rear.
I made changes to the front shock oil progressively from 35wt to 20wt same piston(1 notch) and same spring
the rearshock oil from 30wt to 25wt same piston (1 notch) and same spring
Each run the lap times improved, either the car was getting better or I was :!:
The car felt very stable but with understeer(push), may try some weight up front.
Had a good day :P , out qualified some modern machinery and car was 100% reliable

I was in the lead for an auction on a descent TRX1 this week, but 1 day before it ended the auction got pulled by ebay :| Don't know the reason it as pulled, so better look at it positively; maybe they saved me from a scammer :P
