Novak Ballistic 13.5T parts build

Post by Frankentruck »

I ended up with a Novak Ballistic motor shell in a parts lot, and then came across a 13.5 replacement stator, and then a replacement Novak rotor, and then.... .... ....

...so after staring at the parts in a corner for a while, it felt like it was time to assemble my first brushless motor rebuild.

Some of the packages had instructions. Some of the instructions got followed. 😂

The stator installation was straight forward, as was the pinion side bearing.

The hall effect sensor bearing is difficult to remove. Novak recommends not even thinking about trying, so the old bearing will have to stay in the 'endbell' side.

The number of rotor shims are just a guess from me for each end. I watched a Nick Adams video for some inspiration and thoughts on shim adjustment based on motor testing.

For testing, this was my first use of my SkyRC brushless motor analyzer. Other than adjusting timing, there wasn't much I could do to change the motor run characteristics. I did change rotor shim count/placement a few times to minimize slack and bearing preload.

For comparison purposes, I also checked out a Ballistic 10.5, Reedy Neo 1 (13T), SS4300, and a new Reedy Sonic 13.5.

.
The Neo 1 and SS4300 were significantly higher RPM than the others, with my rebuild seeming to outperform the Ballistic 10.5 and the Sonic 13.5, not that I completely understand how the motors will perform in a real RC. But my rebuilt motor will find out. It has a planned home.

The hall effect sensor bearing is glued in place, it can be removed because I've done it on one mine. I don't suggest it though as long as it spins smoothly. One of my Ballistic motors needs the timing assembly replaced, I think that's the problem anyways.

Side note: don't try to test a motor like a Novak Velociti 3.5R with that SkyRC motor analyzer. I've messed two of them testing two different Velociti 3.5R motors (the amperage read-out no longer reads correctly). And SkyRC will not replace them under warranty, even if you send them picture and video proof of them not work correctly. They just deny there's anything wrong.
