Re: Mid Motor Rustler Build
I've been going deep down the rabbit hole of making my own tires. I made a version that uses an insert, then I spent a ton of time figuring out how to cut inserts out from upholstery foam. Unexpectedly it was way harder than casting the tire. But man, these things GRIP! There's a few minor details I...

Re: Mid Motor Rustler Build
Done! That's $16 worth of parts from McMaster Carr replaced with less than $1 of prints. Looks better, too. http://i.imgur.com/bwCxPvAl.jpg Now that I've got some experience with mold making I want to try to try replacing some of the parts with casts next. The battery brace is the obvious first choi...

Re: Mid Motor Rustler Build
The PLA parts all survived a race night! Check it out, someone even recorded videos of the races. Here's the 2nd qualifier I ran. The truck and the track felt the best in this run. I even managed to work myself up to 1st in the heat until the announcer called it and I promptly yeeted myself off the ...

Re: Mid Motor Rustler Build
I had the truck out for another race this past weekend. Once again it survived without any breakages AND it drove much better this time. Since the last race I went up to a full size shorty which added about 50g then added in another 42g of stick on weights to chassis between the battery and the moto...

Re: Mid Motor Rustler Build
I'm going racing tomorrow night so I spent the night getting the car ready. I wanted to have a solution making that rear camber link longer so I added some extra holes to my rear camber link plate in the 3D model and CNC'd out a pair of them from some scrap carbon fiber I had sitting around. This wa...

Re: Mid Motor Rustler Build
I'm going to eat my words about declaring this build done and finished. I never did convert this truck to a buggy like I planned. Instead I bought a TLR 22 5.0 that popped up locally for really cheap so the Rustler gets to stick around for a while longer. Before I bought the 22 5.0 I was designing a...

Progress! http://i.imgur.com/XuTz44al.jpg http://i.imgur.com/yy0d6pxl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/rI60juQl.jpg I'm pretty happy with how everything turned out. The motor plate took a few revisions to get right but I was able to work it out. The center brace with the inset nuts is a bad idea so that will ...

Re: Future innovations in RC racing (2022 and beyond)
I already see 3d printing as the affordable future of Vintage RC Racing , as parts become scarce they become expensive and race cars become shelf queen's , 3d printed parts can put them back on track where they were designed to be . I think 3D printing will completely disrupt all aspects of RC cars...

Re: Marui Big Bear tires - let's CAD :)
Amon my research I started to talk with someone on another forums about moulding tires. From the discussion, I'm now convinced it is possible to do with a single part for the center mould. The flexibility of the tire should be enough to get the center part out. I'll need to work out the mould for o...

Mid Motor Rustler - V2
It's been a while but I'm back to working on my MM Rustler project. I've decided to design a new version which is why I've started this new thread. It's been a long time since I started my original mid motor conversion and in that time I've gotten way better at 3D design, bought myself a 3D printer,...

Re: Mid Motor Rustler - V2
The printed parts went together pretty nicely! I've got some very minor corrections and a few tweaks to make, but for the first time ever I've printed a prototype that didn't have massive glaring issues that needed multiple iterations to fix. Feels nice. I'm pretty much ready to move on to making fi...

Re: Mid Motor Rustler - V2
It's been a while, but I finally have an update for this project. As stated in my initial post, one of my goals with the project was to have a design that allowed me to easily swap between a laydown transmission and a standup transmission. I finally got around to designing and prototyping the laydow...

Re: Mid Motor Rustler - V2
The CF panel I ordered finally showed up yesterday! Today was the first day of my Christmas vacation so I managed to get this done today. http://i.imgur.com/gOK5nJH.jpg http://i.imgur.com/F32kvNi.jpg The panel was a bit of a gamble - I bought it on AliExpress and it was nearly half the price of most...

Re: Mid Motor Rustler - V2
And it's basically done now! I redesigned and re-printed the transmission case and it's much better now. I reinforced the area that broke and I figured out a design trick to really help with fitting bearings into 3d printed parts - add a small notched cutout on any bearing recess and use the slicer ...

Re: Mid Motor Rustler - V2
I took the Bandit out racing again this past Friday and this time nothing broke! I was able to run the car the entire night in the mod 2wd class and it drove really well. I managed to record the main by strapping a phone to my head - I'm sure I looked silly but the video came out great!
