Re: Turbo Rocky restoration

Derek - yep, the Turbo Rocky really did come with some good options. After lots of cleaning I was left with a box of bits, so the reassembly begins...

Re: Turbo Rocky restoration

Yes, its getting a good going over. Only parts it should need are ball races - despite all the extra Option House parts that were included out of the box (platinum shocks, anti-roll bar, all round universal joint driveshafts), it didn't come with a full set as standard...just some in the gearboxes. ...

Re: Turbo Rocky restoration

Between work, family and some house renovations, its taken me a year to pick up on the Turbo Rocky restoration...but I've got stuck into it again. I've continued the strip down - mechanically its sound apart from some bent parts, its just really REALLY dirty  IMG_3206.JPG IMG_3198.JPG IMG_320...

Re: Turbo Rocky restoration

The TR wheels cleaned up very nice. Not sure what is the best way to remove scuffs - perhaps lots of sanding and polishing or chuck them in a lathe if you have access to one. Your Mid wheels look great, what are you using to brighten them? Thanks - I think the lathe idea is probably the best approa...

Re: Kyosho Optima: keep it vintage or upgrade?

I've purchased a Kyosho Optima for a good price with some ware but no major damage that I can see. I know the shocks are shot and will need new tires however I'm kind of at an impasse on what else I should do. I know this was made before electronic speed control due to it uses a servo setup with wi...

Re: Turbo Rocky restoration

I've cleaned the wheels up, and while they look a lot better than they did, the rims are pretty scuffed up. If anyone has any tips to tidy the edges up, I'd be grateful for the advice. IMG_3285.jpg IMG_3200.JPG And while I was in the wheel cleaning mood, I started tackling some yellowing on my spare...

Re: Turbo Rocky restoration

Very cool resto, always dug the Rocky! U going with vintage Le Mans for power? Not sure yet...I think its got a Yokomo in it at the moment, can't tell the spec as its covered in dirt. I have a 240ST from another Rocky but I don't think its running well, and a 240S in a donor Turbo Optima although I...

Re: Turbo Rocky restoration

Cool! I agree, the car just looks really dirty but otherwise very complete. Are those Platinum shocks and are the wheels and tires original to the TR? This is going to be an interesting rebuild as I am completely unfamiliar with this model. Thanks for posting. 8) Yes, standard on the TR. The wheels...

Turbo Rocky restoration

I recently added a Turbo Rocky to my Kyosho collection after spotting one under a RS200 body on eBay. I owned an original Rocky back in the 80's which I sold at some point, but I picked up and restored another one a couple of years ago. I never had a Turbo Rocky (I progressed onto an Optima Mid Turb...

Re: Restored Turbo Optima

Oh sh|t! I just noticed you actually staged the photo with a similar coast line to the magazine photo! Hahaha, nice job all around. Great looking car. Yep, I wanted to reproduce the image - fortunately I live near the coast, so I literally applied the last decals one evening and was able to dash ou...

Re: Restored Turbo Optima

Very nice job, got 2 here with unpainted body's and one NIB. Looks just about identical to the mag cover car. Keith  Is it an oriiginal NIB? Must be super rare these days! I always thought the Turbo Optima was the best looking car, even today. I'm pleased they re-released it, but in my mind t...

Re: Restored Turbo Optima

At first glance, I thought perhaps your car was used for the magazine cover. You've nailed that paint job! Nice work. The whole car looks great! 8) I guess you should have enough spare parts to build yourself a runner? I do yes, both were intact although one had clearly had a harder life than the o...

Thanks - I always liked that magazine paint job, it was the one that inspired me to get into painting RC cars and I always wanted to recreate it - just took me 30+ years to finally do it!!

Re: Restored Turbo Optima

Those are some great looking paint schemes. I always gravitate toward doing box art bodies because I'm not very creative. It's nice to see something creative and different. Very nice! Thanks Doug, I love the box art look of the Kyosho's but I enjoy the design and painting process so I always do a c...
