Re: Optima Truck Build

Well we're back on track. I was starting to think that a baja bug was the way to go but there's no way I could have done a better job than Mr. Ed's. That thing is absolutely badass. I started to build an optima TRUCK and I'm sticking to it. I've been thinking of picking up a Toyota baja truck conver...

Re: Optima Truck Build

This build is in serious trouble right now. Starting to second guess this whole thing. I trimmed the body tonight and realized that it has "ground effects" shaped into the bottom sides of the body. I don't know how I missed this before. Once the body was trimmed it became painfully obvious...

Re: Optima Truck Build

Made some progress tonight. Got the modded front shock mount installed and tried on a set of first gen RC10GT shocks. Everything clears and cycles smoothly. The lengths are pretty spot on. I was worried about binding with the dog bones at such a radical angle but the whole truck rolls very freely an...

Re: Kyosho Ultima / Sideways Project

Got my driver detailed and my bumper installed. Still need to pick out an esc and throw in a receiver. Swapped out the motor to a Le Mans 240ST for now only because it matches the color scheme so well. Makes me wish this one was full size so I could get inside and go for a ride!

Re: Is the Javelin next in line?

The originals will not hold up to brushless power. The weak link in my opinion is the chain drive. The belt conversion is a better option, but there is a reason that most modern 4wd rc's are shaft drive. The wheels were not aluminum. They are silver painted plastic. You take an Optima, paint the whe...

Re: Optima Truck Build

I got the the rest of the chassis assembled less shocks and front tower. Everything came out good. No stripped screw holes. No hogged out or chipped outdrives. Chassis still has adjustment room for chain stretch--- this might be the easiest optima I've refurbished. I used Stainless hardware througho...

Re: Optima Truck Build

 The wheels are not my favorite. I just like the tires. The wheel/tire combo is just for sizing right now. I really don't want to build an outlaw style truck. I'm hoping for more of a scaler crawler dimensions. I dont want pin spike tires sticking 2" out of the wheel wells. The idea of bug...

Re: Optima Truck Build

Thanks for the tips on the body mounts. That truck looks cool. I wonder why they never made an optima outlaw truck from the factory? It does give me some ideas for the front shock setup. I was thinking it would be nice to use long shocks in the front and have them mounted more vertical for a more tr...

Re: Kyosho Ultima / Sideways Project

Thanks. It's nothing like what I had pictured in my head at the beginning but I'm pretty happy with it. I just made a kydex front bumper for it tonight. Nothing fancy. Very minimalist. As soon as I finish detailing the driver I'll get some final pics. The faded anodizing on the shocks still bothers ...

Optima Truck Build

So I have this original Optima that has been a backyard runner for me for a while and I've finally decided to clean it up. I'm digging through my RC junkyard and putting together some piles of new parts for the job and I looked at this vintage Parma Ford Ranger Truck body and thought it might be coo...
