Re: New guy 1985 Optima rebuild Thread.

I managed to get home this afternoon and decided to start assembling the Optima. I still have some parts on the way and am certain I will be pulling it down again fairly soon but decided I would get it running sooner rather than later. There are so many tings I still want to change or add or make so...

Re: When there is a Blizzard outside...

Very nice toy to have for snow days. And I feel ya. Been stuck since friday here too. We "only" got 20" but since I traded in my Diesel F250 a year ago I don't have snow transportation anymore. Sadly all my RC toys are at my house and I've been at my girlfriends the whole time. Please...

Re: New guy 1985 Optima rebuild Thread.

Okay so in my search for the small parts I have come across the plastic parts kit and springs for the original optima red shocks new from kyosho. They are under the replacement parts for the 2014 scorpion re-release. Same shocks at least physically in size as the old Optima originals. Cheap too. Tha...

Re: New guy 1985 Optima rebuild Thread.

Thanks all for the advice and sharing your past experiences. I know the brushless will have the ability to shred the driveline. I'm hoping/going to try and adjust the accel parameters to make it softer on tip in. We'll see if I'm successful or not. Had some parts show up yesterday. Mostly just spare...

Re: New guy 1985 Optima rebuild Thread.

Thanks for the pictures. I had considered milling down the drive hubs so they would clear but decided against it. I would like to get some nylon or delrin washers for the rim face to prevent scarring from the retaining nut. About a year ago I traded a trailer I no longer used for this. http://i2.pho...

Re: New guy 1985 Optima rebuild Thread.

Thanks for the good advice Dennis. Yes I found a set of 10 going to order soon. And Ceolacanth, as usual, thanks for the link. While that is the closest thing I've found there is another issue that needs to be addressed. Also I did go ahead and get the 3Racing shocks for the Tamiya DT-02. We'll see ...

Re: New guy 1985 Optima rebuild Thread.

Titanium. I can see that. Thanks. I've been on the Pargu website but didn't really come across a color chart. I did see a basic picture of a lot parts in different colors. There is certainly a broad range to choose from. As far as the anodizing goes I have a friend here locally who owns a metal fini...

Re: New guy 1985 Optima rebuild Thread.

Well I finished up my work early today and drove back from Charlotte today. I decided to assemble the wheels tires and see how they looked. I like them. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y13/Dirtleg/Optima%20Rebuild/IMAG0841_zps258ps7ga.jpg The tires are a little narrow for the wheels but not unusabl...

Re: New guy 1985 Optima rebuild Thread.

About the hub size difference. I was thinking about that and decided a nut with a built in hub on it would be perfect. Now I just have to find one that will work. Wish me luck. If not I'll just make some adapters. Might be a good project to use a lathe on. And about the radio. TamiyaDan what you sug...

Re: New guy 1985 Optima rebuild Thread.

Thanks Dan. That all makes sense. I suppose I could see a chain having a higher breaking point but I figured friction would be the detriment. I am surprised that the belts stretch so much. Perhaps there have been improvements in belt contstruction since these were made. I had a motorcycle with a bel...

Re: New guy 1985 Optima rebuild Thread.

Coelacanth those would be a good size. 85mm is a little tall but just a couple mm's over the stock size from my measurements. TamiyaDan, could you elaborate a little. I'm curious as I would think the belt would be more robust. But if the chain is really that stout than that would be good news. Thank...

Re: New guy 1985 Optima rebuild Thread.

Wow thank you very much for the detailed and informative posts. I'll keep the belt drive conversion as a down the road swap. Just collecting pieces at the moment. I had heard about making the rear belt drive out of a Mid front and a chain driven rear by swapping that portion of the differential over...

Re: New guy 1985 Optima rebuild Thread.

Thanks Coelacanth (Prehistoric non-extinct fish??) for the reply and helpful info. edit: I just went through your Barney thread and that is definitely the direction I'm headed. That is an amazing Optima. I already have the front belt drive diff from a mid. What else is needed to do a belt drive conv...

New guy 1985 Optima rebuild Thread.

Good afternoon. First post. Where to Start? Okay in the mid 80's (1985 I believe) I bought a Kyosho Optima RC Car kit. Some history. My first RC car was a Tamiya Audi Quattro. It was a 2 wheel drive kit with an Audi body. I was always disappointed it wasn't 4 wheel drive. Well when I saw the 4 wheel...
