That motivates me to try it anyway...And what is it gonna hurt...If it works then we will have an easier way to do this...How many times have we read the directions on something only to find out there are other ways to do things...When I start I will post pics of the process so we all can see...If you don't mind me kinda jacking your thread I will post the pics here so I don't have to start another thread on this...

Yeah I tried that on my first rc10. It will tint the nylon but I gave up after several hours.

And so it begins...It is a Glad container 1/2 cup size with one tablespoon of black dye...And the spring perch/cup will act like a ball bearing in the solution...I will go over to it from time to time and give it a good shake...

I'm gonna try the cold water method for cleaning grease off bearings...I'm sure it'll work if I give it enough time!

I will update again in the morning...I might just cut this thing in half to see how far it really penetrates...

I'd be interested to see how far also.......my guess is less than 1mm.

If I understand the chemical dyeing process correctly, it's more about bonding the dye to the nylon surface, not depth of penetration.

http://www.dharmatrading.com/home/did-you-know.html

So, you've soaked those parts for about 3 hours in black dye, rinsed them with clean cold water, and that's how they turned out...I'm curious as to why you seem intent on proving the instructions wrong? You'd have been done 4 hours ago (by my watch), with *great* results, if you followed the instructions. :?

Tomorrow when you've had those parts sitting for over 12 hours, rinse them and brush them off with a spare toothbrush. If they look nice and pure black even after that, you'll have proven RIT dye wrong. :)

And while we are at it, why am I the only one that actually adds salt!'?!

I did add vinegar in a previous dyeing session as mentioned in the instructions but not sure what it's supposed to do.....??? However, it did smell quite potent when the solution came out of the microwave...

Check number 2 and it is getting darker...And yes I hit it with a toothbrush before I took the picture...We shall see how long it will take and if it will completely turn black...When I am done I will cut it in half to see how far the solution penetrated...No hot scalding water , no odor , no worrying about the part sticking to the bottom of a pot and melting...Hell I might even add a teaspoon more of the dye to make a stronger solution to see if that will speed it up :)
