Futaba Data Pac - DP-16K

Post by GreenBar0n »

I have had this Futaba 3PJS for over 24 years now. The 3PJS base model can store up to (8) cars.

Never thought that I would have more than (8) models to bind this to, but recently my collection came to a total of (9) vintage and reissue cars.

I knew from reading the Futaba 3PJS manual that you can buy the DataPac DP-16k memory module, which will expand the 3PJS to a total of (16) cars that it can store. I looked everywhere for the Futaba DP-16K memory card, and never saw one.

I did however find a website where a guy is making a 100% compatible card, bought it last night for $17 total.

The site is not secured with an SSL cert, but the checkout was PayPal. Hope this works out.

I learned, to my amazement, that the radio models to car ratio does not have to be 1:1. Similar cars can run on the same model in the radio. The "8 model limit" can be circumvented with similar models that use the same settings. For example, I have 2 Top Cats and 2 Cougars. I created 4 separate models in the radio for them. It turns out that I can run any of those 4 buggies on any of the 4 models. So I can run all 4 with just 1 model.

I haven't tried to bind more than 10 (the limit on my 3PV) receivers to the transmitter, yet, but I think it can be done. My understanding is that the binding process happens in the Rx. It just "learns" the code from the Tx. So it should be possible to bind as many as you like.

I have the Spektrum SM1000 DSM module in my FPJS. Are you running crystals?

Interesting behavior on the Futaba 3PV, but it is FHSS/S-FHSS/T-FHSS, and a much newer Tx.

I'm still in the nostalgia phase of this hobby, and am using a 24 year old Tx that originally came with 27 MHz FM, because that's what I used with the old cars that I still have. The model slots are concrete on this 3PJS, for use with the DSM Spektrum module, unfortunately.

Got the DP-16k memory expansion module today.

At first power on I was prompted to CAM INI?, or initialize the card.

Pressed the + button, and a split second later, I went from (8) models, to (16).

For $17, this was such a great deal. I remember buying this Futaba 3PJS from Tower Hobbies in 2000, and thinking I would never use more than (2) models.

I would like to get one of those 3PJ's one day. Great mid-late 90's radio for nostalgia.

The fail safe feature was what made the 3PJ/S and the Rx it came with, the one to have for nitro in the late 90's.
