Another Meteor

Post by Dadio »

The last car I had in my youth was the Mardave Meteor , I guess it never got the development time I put into my Hotshot as my interests were moving on to real cars and the fairer sex . So now again it's the last car to add to my collection .
Now correct me if I'm wrong but I think its an early long wheelbase as it has the separate motor guard , the original guard is mangled and ground down to hell so I've made a new one .
So far it's had a through clean , a bearing spur gear fitted ,a pair of bearings for the gearbox that were just missing, a set of the new Mardave 2.2 wheels , the Tamiya rear axles needed for the rear wheels and new O rings in the shocks .
The "to do list" includes finding tires ,find appropriate esc , find a Demon motor , make the gearbox support bracket and probably a set of replica RC10 gold shocks from Fan RC .

It turns out it's a short wheelbase after all , I've just never seen a gold one before

Got a little further yesterday , tried stopping the stock shocks leaking by adding an O ring (10x1mm) to the cap , had to cut away the thread so it sits in , worked perfectly on three but one is still weeping , I'll almost certainly go for FanRC RC10 shocks in the long run anyway .
Also made up a custom rear shock tower to lower the body 10mm , only 3d printed tester with no strength but it works , I'm going with a stock Meteor body in ABS to be proper old school with it and keeping the battery box end caps so the body will need cutting appropriately.

This is how the body sits with the 10mm drop at the rear .

I think it looks nice if you excuse the old body that came with it .

That is a good looking stance. Having an 'experienced' body on it doesn't detract from the overall good looks.

While doing some repairs to the body and giving it a rub down I found out how experienced it really is  far from its first rodeo

There is some nice things doing a resto like this... It's like a journey where you discover bits of history of a car. Sometimes looking at those, I'm asking myself about the teen who had it back in time...
I buy kits to build and ru(i)n them :-)

There is some cars where do nothing on the bodyshell is really the best option :-)
Saying this, I'm always trying to find another body in those specific cases...

Just took her out for a first test drive , shock oil is too thick at the rear but still a pleasure , not very fast but it's the stock Mabuchi 540 white end that came with the kit , a small pinion too maybe 13t ? and only Nimh 7.2v battery .
Be nice to give it a little bit more horse power so I'll be on the hunt for a tidy Demon .
