Special Traxxas Rad2

I intend to refurbish a special version of Traxxas Rad2 sold in Europe during 1992.




This cars were imported by Graupner (Germany) and MRC (France) They were called "Radicator"for Graupner and "Vitto" for MRC. They were two versions: the "Standard" with MSC no ball bearing, no slipper and ball diff. The second called "Expert" with full options but no electronic.

Same design as the RAD2 but with the Eagle's Graphite Chassis and fantastic "Hot Pink" rims.

Nice and sleek, not over-engineered, a simple but effective steering crank...all-in-all, a very well-engineered chassis, from the looks of it.

Nice find David - I was looking for one a couple of years ago as I always thought the rad/rad2 was a very very underestimated car, like a poor man's TRX1 If you ever intend to run it make sure you get the allow diff outdrives as the stock plastic ones can't take a beating!

In my defence, I totally understand why you called me out on that...upon closer examination, I stick to my previous comment. The extra components that I deemed unnecessary were hidden behind the right shock tower in this image, which I originally looked at:



The way the servo is mounted on this car, it just looks a lot busier and cramped. Furthermore, all the over-length screws, nylon lock-nuts and what looks to me like computer chassis screws on the gold chassis adds unnecessary weight and makes it look cumbersome.



Now that I had a closer look, I'm not a fan of either setup, but the one on the black chassis is better and more simply executed.

I started to dismantle the gearbox and found some pretty well design parts.

The ball diff is lowered and can be adjusted through a hole into the gear case.





The gear case is held with only two screws on the chassis, but it's tightly maintained in the rear suspension mount.





Aluminium motor guard.



The ball diff with a slim spur gear to reduce friction. Four holes into the joint cup enable the tightening without needed to use a screw into the outdrive.
